Anyone sat in a rented property before? Was it ok?

What do you mean was it OK? I don’t understand the question and not going to guess. Actually the sits I have had I have no idea if they are rented homes or owned by the PP.

I have sat in both rented and owned homes. There is no difference between the two that could classify any distinction. it is entirely how the people live themselves that distinguishes between good or bad. I have sat in owned homes that are really not great and sat in rented homes that were perfect - and vice versa. So it all boils down to the individuals and how they personally choose to live. Some are good some are bad, but nothing to do with owned or rented.

You might like to change how you have written your question and add comments as to why you are asking before you receive a lot of negative feedback

Yes, a few of our sits have been in rentals. What’s the query and are you already there or looking at listings and wondering? #rentalreasons

Not sure how one tells the difference nor if it matters.

Thanks, I’m not going to change anything

Don’t know if the landlord would show up or something

@Travelerthiswld I think there may be additional issues with rentals in the sense that any tenant may theoretically need permission from their landlord to have a sitter in the property, as well as other related matters in connection with the terms of their lease agreement. . . (As an aside, I have always been under the impression that “Home Owners” on the THS site had to be just that - Home Owners. However, I may very well be wrong about that.)

We live in a rental apartment and before we leave we always inform our landlords that a sitter will be occupying the apartment in our absence to take care of our cats.

I wrote a similar comment, and have had it removed.

spot on. MY comment has been removed because I questioned the OP, the moderators, well one of them anyway, does not like me at all.

There’s no way of knowing whether a property is rented or not?

I had one sit on here that was in an apartment. I only know they were a renter and not a condo owner from the following statement. They said, we are renters here so some of the funky things we are not able to fix. I had another sit here in a new apartment development with a gorgeous pool with lounge chairs in it, fireplace and waterfalls by the pool. Gorgeous gym and other areas. They had a leasing office so I know it was all renters. The houses I sit in I have no idea if renters or homeowners.

Hi @StTherese

Just to confirm, as others have mentioned, owning the property is not a requirement. :+1:

As I primarily sit for expats living abroad for a few years at a time, most of the accommodations I stay in are rental properties.
Is it ok? I’m perfectly comfortable with this arrangement; in fact, I wouldn’t have it any other way. (This is why I sit for expats)

You do you.
The thread will be open to all sorts of speculation but that’s OK because we usually like to speculate and go off topic.

As others have pointed out, I have seen no difference between rental and owned properties. Sometimes I have known and sometimes I haven’t.

In some cases, I have been given the owners’ contact in case something happens in the house but it has never occurred to me that the owners would show up just as it has never occurred to me that someone’s daughter, friend or relative would show up.

IMHO, the mutual trust sitters and homeowners place on one another has nothing to do with ownership.

Every now and then, there’s a thread on the forum about some sort of categorization of HOs or sitters (gender, age, cultural background, politics…) Of course those differences exist and everyone is entitled to choose what is best for them but I don’t think one group is more or less trustworthy than others.

We are all similar in the sense that we are all different and unique.
