From time-to-time, we make small tweaks to forum permissions to help things run smoothly.
We’ve recently made one of those tweaks. All members can now edit their posts upto 30 minutes after posting.
We have found that this is usually enough time to edit typo’s and other small errors that can happen.
We’ll keep an eye on things in case we need to make a slight amendment, but just now, we’re happy with where things are.
You’re always welcome to drop myself or Jenny a DM if you’d like to chat about it a little more.

Unless I am missing something, I do not see an edit option at all, even right after I post.
Exactly the same, impossible to edit.

I believe they tried to set the edit time to 30 minutes but got 3 or 30 seconds instead.

As you correctly spotted, a config mistake was made - this was human error. Should be all sorted now. 
What were the nefarious issues with us editing our posts? Please elaborate.
I get why you may want to set a timer to avoid some people significantly modifying the gist of their post when in discussion with other posters, as it can create confusion and discontinuity in the conversation (& sometimes be executed disingenuously.)
That said, sometimes I post things & find I’m in error later & want to correct my information.
Is there any setting that could instead allow the edits, but automatically insert an “edited (date/time)” context clue so readers know that changes were made?

In these instances, the forum team may be able to support - flagging your post with a note, or dropping a team member with a DM.
For example, adding a strikethrough to the older text and adding the updated information.
This an improvement and “helps things run smoothly” how, exactly?

This is fairly common on forums. Editing a post can completely alter it’s contents and then the responses to that post can make no sense. For similar reasons deletions are often blocked as well. This allows some editing in cases of a mistake in a short window but once the post is read and responded to it stays as is.
