My nearby city has those bicycles that have docking stations. I already paid for an annual membership that allows one-hour rides for free.
If a bike is lost, stolen, or badly damaged, my credit card will get charged $2,000 USD.
It would be nice to leave sitters my access card so that they can enjoy, but I’d be worried about a bike getting stolen. Is there any way to do this well? I haven’t been asked by any sitters, but I’d like to offer.
I think it’s a lovely gesture but I personally wouldn’t want to take on that liability. At least with your own vehicles, you can typically have it covered by insurance.
I did a home exchange in Barcelona once and they have local bike shares but really only for residents. It was too clunky to use the hosts’ memberships even though they offered cause you needed an app to sing into their account or something.
unless you have your own bike, I would just redirect folks to use the pay as you go bike or scooter options, get a cheap but decent bike you’re willing to share/lose, or potentially consider having your HS sign some kind of waiver acknowledging responsibility we’re something to happen but I’m not sure if you’d really want to chase that if something actually did happen.
I wouldn’t offer that when there’s such a high liability charge on your end, and we’re responsible sitters in our 50’s & 60s.
Offering your own bikes, scooters, or giving a guide to how the local pay-as-you-go bikes work is great, but I wouldn’t do it in your scenario.
But what a fantastic HO you are to consider it
Maybe check whether you can gift credits or such, if the sitter has their own account or wants to start one. That way, you could be generous without liability.
Hi @AllTheFerretsDied
That’s a really thoughtful idea, but with a potential $2,000 charge if something goes wrong, I probably wouldn’t lend out a membership that’s tied to my own account or credit card.
I’d see if the bike share has a way to gift ride credits or add credit to a sitter’s own account instead. That gives them the same opportunity to explore without exposing you to the liability.
If that’s not possible, another option is simply to point sitters towards the pay-as-you-go bikes or scooters. Most sitters would be perfectly happy with that, and I’d never expect a homeowner to take on financial risk just so I could use a bike.
It’s a generous thought, though, and I’m sure your sitters will appreciate that you even considered it.

I think purchasing a bike with a lock is a better idea…do you live in an area where someone can just hop on the bike from your home to ride around or have trails near? I’ve been on a couple sits with bikes available that I’ve used just tool around their neighborhood. Other sits I’ve rented a bike or taken a bike tour with a group. Most sitters if they really want to bike, will find a way on their own, but having a bike available can certainly be nice .
