Gun Dog. Friendly fire?

This article made me sit up and beg for an explanation. An owner left a loaded shotgun in his vehicle with his dog in the back. The dog jumped to the front and set off the gun, injuring an innocent person on the outside. Police said the dog, whose breed has not been revealed, accidentally triggered a loaded shotgun inside the vehicle.
It is illegal to travel with a loaded shotgun in a vehicle, according to Nebraska state law.
This is not the first time a dog has accidentally set off a loaded gun. In a previous case the dog jumped on the bed to be petted and inadvertently activated the trigger, injuring his owner in the process. Again another accident.. clearly in both cases any safety catch mechanism was not activated.

Sort of unfair to the dog to be blamed for that. Even if the charges are ultimately dismissed.

He needs an attorney who is a real pitbull.

Irresponsible gun and pet owner. Same kind of idiots who leave guns unsecured and a child hurts or kills themselves or someone else.

It’s the US. People regularly try to go through airport security carrying a loaded handgun. There is no intelligence test required to own a gun in the US.

Nebraska allows open and concealed carry of handguns. That is, anyone 18 years and older can have a gun in plain view or hidden on their person in Nebraska. It is illegal to have a loaded shotgun in a vehicle (loaded rifles are okay !?!) but that’s probably for anti-poaching reasons. Poaching violations are usually a misdemeanor and not taken very strictly.

Whether dogs in Nebraska can be armed is probably an issue still working its way through the courts.

Terrible accident. Poor dog. Suspect safety catch mechanism is not the underlying problem here.
