HO asks me to do something illegal - water the grass when there is a water ban in the area

Hi I am my second sit and am enjoying it tremendously. I have a wonderful couple have me for their 2 kitties. We have a severe water shortage in Calgary and it’s not allowed to water outside (along with many restrictions) they said they know about it but they ask me to water NEW SOD. I personally am uncomfortable being out side with a jug of water (they asked me to go around with a jug) I have been out a couple of times but it makes me nervous. Just hoping for rain. Am I required to do Thanks for reading. I’m in Calgary the ban is citywide.

Cheers

Edited title to give more clarity

As of last evening, it looks to me as even the hand watering is restricted. Previously, it was allowed. So it looks like the restrictions are ‘fluid’ (couldn’t resist)

I would advise the HO that you will closely monitor the advisory level resume watering if and when the total ban is lifted or lowered.

Go with what your gut says but if they are enforcing the ban with fines etc I would certainly make it clear to them that if they insist that you proceed despite your objections and concerns, they will be liable for any fines. If the enforcement is more serious eg criminal charges it’s just a nope never.

Can you recyle washing up water etc.

I will do a rain dance as well  I will mention it to them - just that they knew but wanted me to do it anyway- with a water jug I don’t want them upset as some of the sod around the walk is already browning when I arrived.

Sure is fluid - there is great info on the City’s website and the Alberta Emergency app.

I thought of that - not sure and I don’t think I will risk the 3k fine.

Whether there are fines or not, a ban is a ban. If people could just ignore it, then there wouldn’t be a ban, it would be a suggestion. I like the idea of telling the pet parent that you’ll monitor the advisory level and resume watering when the ban is lifted or lowered.

I have messaged the homeowners will see how they respond. I expect they would understand that I don’t wanna get dinged with a $3000 fine.

Yea I messaged them. Thank you for input, very glad to get such solid input from here.

If it helps i tend to use waste water. So old washing up, ir any used water that would normally just be thrown diwn the drain.
Sounds like youve got it sorted anyway.

Not sure if this direction from the owner was verbal or in writing but as they are using the THS platform to engage you as a sitter, by directing you to break the law they are in breach of clause 5.1.5 of the THS Terms of Service which states all members must comply with the Acceptable Use Policy which states:

"You may not use our Platform:

In any way that breaches any applicable local, national or international law or regulation.

In any way that is unlawful or fraudulent, or has any unlawful or fraudulent purpose or effect."

Maybe communicate that to them.

The watering restrictions vary so I am just waiting for that to change or some rain. They are only away a few days.

I saw more on the news about this today. The water main break happened about a week ago so there have been restrictions in place already. But water usage had been creeping up again. Then yesterday 2 workers were injured, probably now occupational health and safety investigation causing further delays.
So the restrictions were tightened more about 10pm local time on Thursday. Hand watering new sod was allowed until they ramped up the restrictions. Have you heard back from the HO yet?

Ask them, if you do it and you get caught, will they pay the penalty/take responsibility?

We had a sit where the owner asked us to let the dogs run free in the woods, but it was banned because of breeding season. She said: “there’s never anyone checking.”

We said: “ok, but if we get caught, are you going to pay the penalty?”

Result: the dogs weren’t let off leash

Yes all is good - it is the City’s water we can’t use but we can use store bought water so she is covering costs for bottled water. Only have to keep the new sod alive. Thanks for the input.

All is good - got commercial bottled water which is ok - not out of the city’s supply. It will continue here into next week.
