Not sure what country, but I wonder if it becomes a civil matter? If you told the HO that you all have an agreement that would hold up in court in your favor, the HO might have “cooled down”. Although, from the way you described/wrote, it sounds like it escalated unnecessarily.
Well, I disagree. Sometimes it’s difficult to take interesting photos/videos every day, so you might get a really good day for shots and another day uninteresting.
I agree @Smiley this has been my experience with some cats . They sleep in the exact same spot everyday or if they are outdoor cats “disappear” in the garden for hours . So they are often not necessarily around to take an interesting photo at the same time each day .
When they are doing something more interesting or photogenic I snap a photo or two to share with the host later .. as a result my camera roll is full of cat photos .
I do provide a daily update if that is what the host wants ( some have said they only want it every couple of days or once a week ) and I’ll attach a photo but it might be from earlier in the day or the day before . I don’t wait for the host to prompt me but also I send it at a time that is convenient for me and stick to that time every day .
What agreement are you referring to ? The Trustedhousesitter agreement does NOT give a sitter legal rights to stay in the owners home if they have told you to leave .
Is it possible that the tone or content of your messages was harsh or disrespectful in some way? I would also ask a sitter to leave if they made me feel uncomfortable or attacked via text for simply asking for photos of my pet/being frustrated that I was having to request them each day. The owner did not know you were sick until you told them — if they already told you that they wanted daily photos, it makes sense that they would express disappointment if you failed to send photos two days in a row.
Depending on which app you use, photos have metadata and recipients can see when your photos were taken (ex. on iMessage). If I realized that a sitter was sending photos all taken on the first day, I would be worried that they were neglecting my pet.
If you send the photo via WhatsApp, it automatically strips away all underlying metadata (EXIF data) to protect your privacy. The recipient will only see the image itself; they won’t even be able to check a date, let alone know it was changed.
That being said I wouldn’t be using photos taken previous to deceive a host -
Rather I would be sending a message an a regular set time ( that is convenient for me as well as the host ) and say something like this is where I found xx sleeping this morning or this is what xx got up yesterday.
A photo provides reassurance to the host even if it just shows the pet in their usual sleeping spot .. but hosts have often commented they they love the photos I take because of the variety . This is because I capture moments as they happen but send them to the host later at a regular set time ( which is not necessarily daily ) .
If there was an urgent issue that the host needed to be informed of I would have course contact the host immediately .
On a few occasions I have been ill on a sit - I made sure the pet was cared for and sent the regular update to the host . If my illness affected pet care negatively in anyway I let the host know . In my case it has just meant more time snuggling up with the pet and sending a photo to the host showing that .
My own rule of thumb is that I send photos that are no more than 24 hours old.
Was the real issue that you turned off the indoor cameras?
I’m both a homeowner and a sitter on this site. When I sit, I send a couple of photos/videos per day. No one has ever had to ask me for them.
I would prefer that when sitters watch my dog, that I get the same treatment. The sitter I recently had, sometimes sent photos but often it was at my prompting. She was new to TH so I chocked it up to that. Ultimately I hope she learns that most of us miss our pets and would like a good morning or good night photo at least.
Of course you will tell the owner that the pictures you are sending are from days earlier otherwise that’s being deceitful as the idea of photos is generally considered to be giving the current status with the pet. Otherwise why wouldn’t the owners just take a bunch of pictures of the pets before they leave and look at them during their trip?
I always ask the owners when they would like updates. The majority say when I feel like it, and very few have wanted daily updates. It is much easier with dogs to send daily photos than cats, as you say.
I appear to have opened a can of worms here which was not my intention, and most of my photos/videos are sent on the day they’ve been taken.
I’m sure a lawyer would beg to differ. It is a written agreement between the HO and sitter.
I wouldn’t mind at all if the photos were a few days old. Mostly I’m just interested in the brief check in that all is well, versus a proof of life photo of my pets. If a sitter is messaging me telling me the pets are well, and put in a cute photo from 2 days ago, I wouldn’t care. My cats like to hide so sometimes you take the photos when they decide to present themselves to the pawparrazi ![]()
The sitter said that they defended themselves and it escalated into an argument, after which the homeowner demanded the sitter leave.
This cat HO said sitter here is not for holiday, is for looking after her cat) It’s unfair to say words like this:
…
Comments like this are awful. It is like the HO is treating a sitter like an unpaid slave. Unfortunately some do but thankfully in the minority. To me they are all mini breaks/holidays. It is to explore and see another area or revisit one you like. It is also nice to have a four legged companion helping you explore coastal paths, moorland etc. Unfortunately some home owners do treat you badly such as thinking , oh we have a sitter, they can put up with all the inconvenience of all out building work whilst we are away etc. And they give a key to electricians, plumbers etc. to just let themselves in whenever they like. I think some home owners need to be reminded, that a sitter is not there just for their pets and workmen and that we are not their slaves, to just be bossed around and put up with every inconvenience..
This is where you crossed the line. You’re telling the host how they must do things according to your preconceived notions of how people must act.
It’s ok to say you weren’t feeling well, and explain why you didn’t get back to her in a timely fashion. It’s not ok to tell her she’s wrong and you’re right. It’s patronizing, opinionated, judgemental, and frankly it’s rather insulting. I completely understand where the host is coming from and if I was in the same position I’d be very angry although I’d probably put on a poker face until the completion of the sit and make my feelings known in the review.
It’s not our role as sitters to ‘educate’ Hosts, much as we’d like to
. Simply write the Review honestly and let the Host draw their own conclusions…..
Thank you for leaving your comments, but I don’t agree with what you said here. First of all, the host knew I was. not well, as I told her on the first day by asking if she has pain killer. Secondly, It’s my right as a sitter to express my needs as well when I feel I’m being bossed by the host. When she threatened me by saying: if you don’t meet the expectation, I will need to ask you to leave. I told her Please call the THS to discuss, as I found our communication didn’t work. What I found is that the host is the kind of person who doesn’t treat others with equal respect and trust, only caring about her pets. It is very obvious from her request to use the camera on the sitter.
I hope my case give reminds to people, and less sitter has experience like mine, and there are more pleasant experiences in sitting. To finish: it is an equal and mutually beneficial thing for both sides. Otherwise, it won’t work.
What country did this take place in? In the US if the sitter asked me if I had pain killers phrased exactly how you said it, I would think she has an addiction problem. I think of hard drugs instead of her asking, do you have any Tylenols in the house for my headache? Actually I would think a sitter can just have it delivered to her and would wonder why is she involving me in her care when I am on holiday. I would then wonder if she was independent enough to watch my pets.
