House swapping on THS?

Have a look at People Like Us - it’s a home exchange site and they have a Facebook group too. I sometimes see posts listed asking to look after pets too with the home exchange.

Why not think creatively? Of course this is the “right place” for it! There couldn’t be a better place! Sure there are house swapping sites, but this is already an established site for people with pets - which is always the critical factor. It would be super easy to set up a swap option.

You live in Boston but have family in Worcester, or Vermont. Or live in Seattle and would like to swap city life for a few days in the San Juan Islands.

It should be simple enough to set up these days - charge an extra $50.00 for this and expand our options exponentially!

There are probably 100 FB groups, and other groups, and various websites that people can maybe sometimes find a swap.

But THS is a well-known established brand/entity with an already established and trusted paid-subscriber base. It is would be foolish to not take advantage of this market segment, offer this service and increase their revenue.

Hi all,
We are members of THS (both pet parents of two adorable kitties and pet sitters) and we’re pretty new here. We are living in Berlin and we love traveling and exploring new cultures. So we are wondering if there’s anyone who is interested in exchanging homes (with your pets/leaving your pets) or has experience in exchanging homes via THS.
Thank you, and have a wonderful weekend!

We are avid supporters of home exchange, but I do not believe that this is the right place to look for such. Home exchange and house sitting are two very different things. We belong to another platform for home exchange (as well as Trusted Housesitters) in order to maximize our opportunities.

I agree. We’ve done a strictly home exchange in the past, and I kenneled my dogs with our vet during that time. But on THS, I wouldn’t do a home exchange. It would also make it much more difficult to find someone that wants to exchange with you, if you are in a not so popular location.

Late to the party as I am, my vote is for having a swap section. Maybe there are other sites dedicated to it but an already trusted platform is always a better bet than testing the waters in the unknown. It should definitely 100% be a separate section of the site though, I really don’t want to have to manually filter out yet more things that I don’t want to see. It can be hard enough already.

I was thinking that it might be nice for two owners to set up a direct exchange, where they stay at each other’s homes as a sitter. It would be a pretty efficient way to travel; both parties get a place to stay in return for their efforts for the exact same dates.

Has anyone ever done that?

I’m reaching out to any other Home Owners who would consider doing a long term exchange. Something on the order of two to three months.

Hi @p13guy and welcome to the community forum. We’ve moved your post to this thread where you’ll find some existing feedback on home swaps, which we don’t facilitate on the main website. There are companies who specialise and have the framework for house swaps which you’ll find by searching online.

I see you have a combined THS membership, that’s awesome. There are many other members who are both pet parents and sitters like you, who get sitters to come and care for their home and pets, while they travel and house sit for other pet parents.

It’s something that I’m very interested in, but THS don’t have any mechanism to make it happen.

I only recently joined as a petparent, but was thinking of combining my membership. (I’d want to reach out to neighbors first to offer some free catsitting and dogwalking and have recent references before I try it.

We live in an NYC apartment with 3 cats. We’d enjoy short swaps weekends, 3 days, 5 days with people within 3 -5 hours drive in the Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Western Mass, Boston, Philly, etc.

My thinking was that if it was easy to find sitters for my NYC apartment, and we joined in the future as sitters, we would do what you term "flexible swap(s) without a direct match. " We have cats, so this is how we would do it. Leave the cats home where they would rather be. It didn’t even occur to me that dogowners could just swap homes with the dogs!

I’m not sure how THS could help to facilitate these type of swaps, but I think there may be a lot of citydwellers who don’t have a “weekend place” but would love the chance to spend the weekend – or a week with remote work – in the country and plenty of people who live too far for a day trip from a major city who’d love the chance to spend the weekend or a week in a “nearby” cultural mecca.

Pips - Please use Find a Pet Sitter to look me up. Search Nicholas & Thea in the Asheville, North Carolina region. As I am both a host and a sitter we can make this work. If you are a host, you can post a new sit that I can apply to. If you are a sitter, I will post a sit that you can apply to. :grinning:

I’d be interested in starting a discussion about a swap. Please search Find a Pet Sitter for Nicholas & Thea in the Asheville, North Carolina region and send me a message.

We’re also combined owner/sitters and would like to swap with others in the same position. We are also in Asheville, so we ought to combine forces on keeping eyes open for opportunities. Our profile has a link to our profile, search on Golden Griffy in Asheville for our listing.

Thank you Julie for directing my post to the right place.

I am a member of two of the house swap sites you mention and this has been my experience so far:

  1. While there are other members in those groups who have animals to care for, they are few and far between.
  2. Not many others on those sites want to swap houses where they would have the responsibility of taking care of animals.
  3. It was difficult for me to find a sitter on this platform for the last sit I posted, so much so that I had to cold contact sitters to find one. There is no guarantee that if I arrange to go sit for a host, that another sitter will want to come do my house sit.

By trusted house sitters facilitating this type of exchange, it adds value to your product with very little overhead. This thread has 92 other posts in it, it seems like other members would also find this service beneficial.

Hello I’ve just joined this group as I’m hoping to spend 6 weeks in London visiting family this December/January. At the same time I’ll be leaving my lovely home in Devonport, Auckland during the summer and, of course, my own two cats. My question is, is there a facility for doing home and pet swaps??

Hello @FelicityT and a warm welcome to the Community Forum :wave:t2::slightly_smiling_face:

Just to clarify this isn’t a house/pet swap site but by choosing a combined membership you can travel and house sit whilst someone/others comes to take care of your two cats. I have attached a thread you should find helpful

I have also attached a link to explain the membership types for you.

I have also attached a video to explain how it all works.

For reference once you are a member and once your listing is completed you can also add your TrustedHousesitters profile on to your Forum profile by following the attached link, should you wish. This will then enable others to offer you helpful advice and feedback and will also give your listing extra exposure!

If you are unsure how to do this, or if you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to ask, we are all more than happy to help.

Also, remember you can use the spyglass symbol at the top of the page next to the TrustedHousesitters logo and search for any questions that you may have as they have most likely already been answered on here and of course if not then please just ask!

Thanks for letting me know. I don’t actually need a combined membership because finding someone for my house will never be a problem due to my location, I just thought it would be nice to find someone who could swap at exactly the same time.

Kind regards
