@Daisy999 yes definitely Freo We don’t like to waste time and effort saying complete words
In the UK we sometimes say “chrimbo” for Christmas. And, of course in East London we have Cockney rhyming slang…
Agreed @ziggy there’s no point in wasting effort saying full names, we have many short cuts for Aussie place names:
Brissie (Brisbane)
The Goldie (Gold Coast)
Sunny Coast (Sunshine Coast)
Bundy (Bundaberg & the rum!)
Rocky (Rockhampton)
Barky (Barcaldine)
Gundy (Goondiwindi)
CQ (Central Queensland)
FNQ (Far North Queensland)
And that’s just a handful of Queensland names! Have to stop now as I’m worn out!
Is ‘Maggie’ Margaret River by any chance?
@Smiley, not sure aabout that but in Queensland “Maggie” is Magnetic Island, near Townsville FNQ
Wow! It seems Aussie is a bit like colloquial French, they use all these shortenings and, out of context, they could refer to lots of different things.
@ziggy I’m feeding some of them at the moment!!
Margaret river=margs
Geraldton=Gero
Kalgoorlie-Kal
Ahh Western Aus…
We do it in Cantonese, too.
Oh yes of course, Margs.
Yes, I loved what I saw of WA, must return
Margs, is Margaret River @Smiley
Edit, scroll on, it was already mention
