For me, it’s getting more and more difficult to tolerate high temperatures and for the last few years I’ve been escaping from the heat in Southern Spain for two or three months. Every year we beat records of high temperatures and we get a heat wave after another with just a few days in between.
I definitely prefer the sun I live in Wales and I don’t see much of it these days and it’s incredible how a bit of sunshine does wonders for my mental health and motivation in general.
I think the Canary Islands are great place to escape winter: lovely people, lovely food, I visited in December and it was sunny most of the days I was there. They have been experiencing lots of storms lately so I’d check that before going.
Hi @Lily_V
Just completed a nearly month long sit in Tenerife and you are right that in the main resorts in the South the night time low was 16c-17c with daytime highs in the mid 20’s. Where I was up a mountain in South Tenerife it was much cooler especially at night. In fact I had to find a solution as I was asked to sleep with the door open for the cats but the temperature in the guest cottage with no central heating was dropping to 8c. Fortunately I discussed it with the HO and agreed to close the cats in with me at night and use the heating option on the air con unit at night. It did get considerably warmer the last 10 days or so with minimum temperatures moving towards 14-15c.
I just spent 11 weeks in Australia incl. 2 catsits. Had a wonderful summer there. Returned to the Netherlands March 1 and was concerned about hitting the tail end of gloomy, wet, and windy winter, but to my surprise it’s only been sunny since my return! And this weekend we even had 16-17 C…now back to 7 C but still no sign of deep greys!
No offense taken. I completely agree with you that the City of San Francisco itself does not have warm weather. It is great for those who loathe hot weather.
However, travel inland a bit (north, east, or south) and you will see lots of prolific citrus plants, grape vines, bougainvilleas, and olive trees, all of which I associate with a Mediterranean climate.
Love San Diego weather too!
We are currently (not sitting) in India (Mumbai) and the weather is spectacular! Blue skies, sun all day, low to mid 30s°C every day with low humidity- just perfect. We’ve just come from 3 months in Malaysia where we did two long cat sits- in KL & Johor Bahru. Weather was hot and very humid, very often overcast and rainy at times. Not a very comfortable climate (we much prefer India) but both sits were great! Gorgeous communal pools, comfy homes & sweet kitties.
It’s been a great relief spending the winter in the warmth after last year doing a whole winter in the UK!!
Did you find the houses too cold for winter or was it just me? I do love a good ceramic floor but sometimes I wished the spaces were a bit smaller Tenerife is in my to-do list, I have only visited Gran Canarias. Is there a place on the island that you liked the most?
For Tenerife it really depends what you’re after:
- Southern part: very dry, sun/sea/sand, and also: mass tourism
- Northern part: very green, obviously more clouds & rain, tourism much more focused on nature or simply spending the winter away from N/W Europe in a pleasant place. Spectacular landscapes
Since I have more than my fair share of clouds and rain here at home, I might be more interested in visiting the southern part of the island! Very useful info Bluehorse, thanks!
The northern part sounds amazing too though…
You might also want to consider Lanzarote. It’s very small, and the climate is perfect most of the time.
I’ve heard great things of Lanzarote, a cousin of mine used to live there and always spoke highly of the place and the locals. That “must visit” list of mine keeps on growing
I lived on Lanzarote for a few years and absolutely loved it. It’s one of the smaller Canarian islands but for me I prefer it to Tenerife, Fuerteventura or Gran Canaria.
There are 3 main resorts on Lanzarote in Playa Blanca in the South, Costa Teguise just North of the capital and Puerto Del Carmen in the middle of the island. The resorts cater to the Brits, Irish and German holidaymakers.
Some good beaches and walks available.
I quite like Arrecife the capital city. It’s walkable city with a decent beach and very local.
No you have a point. Many Spanish and canarian places have no heating (or air con). The house I just did a sit in got cold at night with no heating available at night when it started to hit low double digit temperatures.
I was surprised by how cold it got! Sometimes the house colder than outside. I understand the design is based on mild winters, and hot, long summers but it’s good to be prepared.
