I’m really interested in doing a pet sit in Seoul, as I’m planning to spend some time there this year.
I noticed there are very few listings on TrustedHousesitters, and almost no active sits at the moment. I already set alerts and favorited all the hosts, but it still seems extremely rare.
For those who have experience in Asia:
• Have you ever managed to get a sit in Seoul?
• Is it just very uncommon, or is there another way to find opportunities there?
• Would you recommend any alternative platforms or strategies?
A few years ago we did a sit in Incheon which is next to Seoul for 7 weeks–they listed it about 5 months ahead which is further out than the vast majority of hosts seem to post their listings.
From what I have seen, the vast majority of hosts are foreign residents who work there in some capacity, often teachers. And for this reason, you are likely to see the most listings over holiday periods and the summer where they may take vacations, go back home for a visit, etc… The people we sat for were a family of four and the parents were both teachers in a nearby international school and they were going back to the US for the summer.
Since summer is a bit off still so you probably won’t see as many listings now as you would in the coming months. Generally speaking, compared to other countries in the area, Korea is probably one of the countries with the most listings, relatively speaking, again because of a decent population of foreign residents.
As far as I know, I don’t think there are other platforms that would have more listings in Asia In particular so THS is probably your best bet. But you may keep your eye out on other sites and it could be worth it to pay the relatively low joining fee to apply to a particular listing. There may also be Facebook groups but that is not a place I regularly look for sits so can’t really speak to that experience–only booked one once about 7 years ago.
We did a THS sit on GEOJE island last year. There are a few for Busan, Jeju and Seoul that come up. Whoever said it’s mostly for expat teachers is right (ours was too) so holidays are your prime time to look or set dates. #koreanfun
This actually applies to many countries such as Asian countries, all expats listings, no local residents’, as in some cultures inviting strangers to stay in their home is insane
Just before the world shut down for covid I managed a 10 day sit for a Canadian/US couple on Jeju and had a great time with their Shanghai-adopted dog and Jaanese -adopted pair of cats. I’d be thrilled to get back again. A challenge is that even though there are 3 or 4 English language schools on Jeju, they all seem to take their breaks at the same time. So you can’t really string together a long set of sits.
