Absolutely! I always use that as part of a series of checks as to whether to choose to apply. Rightly or wrongly, in my view if you can’t present a well made bed on a website, everyone can see, it makes me worry what the rest of the house might be like!
I’m just looking for clean and comfortable. It’s not about judgement or compassion. Anyone who is offering accommodations in exchange for pet care should plan to offer a clean home. I’m spending my time and money to travel to the HOs location, so I only take sits that I think will be pleasant, comfortable experiences. People can live however they want, but sitters can and should choose sits that align with our own standards.
As the original member who made this post, I definitely didn’t mean it to be judgmental or spiteful in any way at all. I think those forum members who thought so, were in the minority and the majority on here agreed with my post and provided valuable feedback. After so many comments on this topic it really got me thinking … - here’s an article on the subject -some food for thought The Last Word On Nothing | There are Two Kinds of People: Those Who Make Their Beds and Those Who Don’t
Isn’t that exactly the gist of this thread?
that really says it all
I’m the kind of person whose living space tends to get cleaner and more organized over time, to the point where no one would ever say it looks like the place hasn’t been cleaned. But I don’t make my bed every day. I wash it regularly, but since I shower before going to bed, I don’t see the point in making the bed and airing it out every single day. I’ll openly admit that I’m just too lazy for that. And yet, anyone who knows me would probably describe me as one of the most organized and hardworking people they know.
The way I understood this topic was what people choose to present as an introduction to their home more than the habit of regularly making the bed or always having the house spotless and clutter free.
I recently read in a listing something like “I would like to get the house in the same clean and tidy condition as a I leave it, the rest is up to the sitter”. I like this because it’s not about what you do when you’re on your own it’s about how the place is left for others.
Those standards are not necessarily the same. We tend to dress and behave differently in private and in public and there’s a similar difference in the level of cleanliness and tidiness.
Wow, that’s a wonderful mindset. It’s very mature because it allows other people to live by their own habits while trusting that everything will be fine as long as things are left the way they found them. I bet these people also make great parents who can teach their children the value of independence.
Actually, the minority’s feedback was also very important - all feedback was including yours - that’s why I presented the question to receive different opinions.
I like that too! And that’s also the reason I wouldn’t bee too happy to provide a house tour during a video chat.
The house will be exactly as in pics when the sitter arrives, but not necessarily at other times. It’s not dirty or super cluttered, but also not quite as orderly.
Reminds me of a control freak host, by contrast. Her listing said that she wanted sitters to make their beds daily, like while she was gone.
I’m so happy they told the truth though! Some owners - this happened to me - put up beautiful real estate photos with different furnishings etc. to what is there presently ie. not the real-life photos of the current state of their home and furnishings, then you arrive to the grubbiness and want to barf. I was on a Hawai’i sit that looked so idyllic in the photos, then, on arrival, the owner apparently had a love of vintage and everything was super old like it was from the 1800s - and not in a charming way - itchy sheets with holes in them, dusty pillows. Dust was just in all the furnishings and all the bed sheets. Plus, there was a weird and dark ghost energy in there, along with the weird paintings of creepy kids. We were so creeped out. On one hand, love Hawaii and loved the surroundings of this home and the awesome pets, but there was this consistent feeling of something being unsafe and so off/weird in that home. I wish they had posted what was actually there! Always do a video call for an international sit to get a tour! ALWAYS!
