Our sitter arrives in 2 days. Preparations are going well, cleaning (except for final touch ups) are done. We changed the battery on the door locks and smoke alarms. Updated the welcome guide.

Of course just when we think we have all the boxes checked, our refrigerator started leaking. It’s developed this intermittent leak because a drain line gets clogged with ice. It’s not a terrible leak but seriously annoying. My husband will get in there this weekend and clear the drain line with heat (hair dryer) so hopefully it will be fine for a week or so. We’ll give the sitter a heads up to just keep an eye out for water around the fridge, or maybe just leave a towel there.

We have had it with this fridge. Last time it was the ice maker leaking. When we return, we have some refrigerator shopping to do as we think it’s time to send Leaky McLeakFace to the appliance graveyard.

Hopefully that’s the only mishap we face, fingers crossed.

Not a big deal if the sitter can’t use the icemaker. However, if the sitter is younger generation, you may want to leave them a recipe on how to make ice.

You’re right, but I think a Tik Tok demonstrating the recipe would be better understood:)

I have to ask the age of your fridge.
It may not be old enough 😜

Thank you for attempting to fix this problem and for your preparations for your sitter.

We had a sitting over Christmas for a week and the owner told us just before arrival that the shower had broken and the plumber was not arriving until New Year (allegedly)

We were offered to use the outdoor shower which we declined!! The house was in London with a small overlooked backyard . Why they had an outdoor shower, heaven knows. It was a cat sitting who cleaned herself!!

This is truth! Our fridge is 10 years old has always been problematic. I miss the days of refrigerators that lasted forever!

My (now dead) grandparents’ fridge worked for decades, but we had to replace it for them, because the freon it used was being outlawed in their state for environmental reasons.

Freon is now no longer allowed to be made across the U.S., so many old fridges are no longer usable, unfortunately.

At one time, it seemed like household appliances would outlive their owners. That’s drastically changed. Now they barely outlive guinea pigs.

Ugh Murphy!!! We had changed all batteries in smoke detectors a few days ago. This afternoon, out of the blue (no cooking happening) the downstairs detector starts giving that annoying low battery chirp. So we change the batteries again, maybe the other batteries were defective.

Nope, chirp, chirp, chirp.

Finally we guess the whole unit is defective so husband runs off to the store to pick up a new one (we changed all of them 2 years ago, as they are supposed to be changed every few years). He comes back, changes it, and problem solved.

Now even fire safety devices don’t last more than two years. Frustrating!!!

Wow 😮 Mine isn’t quite that old but it’s at least 30. I forget the purchase date but the receipt is around somewhere; had to look it up when Mr Fridgie needed a new timer. He eats timers for breakfast and I’m sure he leaks cold air and wastes electricity, but he’s hanging in there 😆

I’m all for living lightly on the earth and protecting the environment, but if my fridge was working fine I’d be inclined to think, “come and find it”… 🤣

At the time, the utility company was offering incentives if you replaced your freon fridge and the new ones were more energy efficient, so we took advantage.

When we have an upcoming trip we are extra careful to make sure all appliances and maintenance items are working properly so the sitter won’t have any issues.

Hate to pile on but the refrigerator my dad bought with his first paycheck from Westinghouse before I was born is still running fine in our basement as a beer fridge. I turned 73 this summer. Just saying…
