New here need some help with applications

Hello every body , I am a long term sitter on a platform named “ nomador “.

It’s more a European platform but I discovered you and I paid my membership .

On nomador I am a 5 :glowing_star:sitter . But here in trussitter nobody wants to give me a chance to do my first sitting :smiling_face_with_tear::smiling_face_with_tear::smiling_face_with_tear:.

Because I am new . My English is good average and maybe I don’t find the words to make a family want me . Every time I apply for a sit I screenshot and google translate all my nomador reviews …. But it is difficult to gain trust .

What do you recommend me ?

Hello @Valoo and welcome :waving_hand:t3: You could add your profile to your forum name & experienced THS members will offer some advice. Where are you applying for? Have you added your Nomador reference to your profile for info and added some references too? They will all help. There are only 5 slots for every listing so it can be hard initially if you’re up against those with lots of reviews but am sure it will happen! #addyourprofile

You can add references from people you know. You could specifically ask some Nomador clients to write these reference-reviews for you in English for the site.

Make sure your photos show you with pets not just action photos of you traveling.

Most homeowners want a video chat, so if you can practice English specifically around answering common pet care questions and questions about why you love to sit and travel that would be helpful.

Bonjour et bienvenue! Il faut continuer a essayer, et faire plus d’applications!

I like the suggestion to ask some of your Nomador hosts if they’d write you a review on TH. They could even do it in French and you could run it through Google Translate.

Don’t be discouraged! Even before the 5-application limit, it took a while to get a first sit. Understandably, many hosts will go with sitters who already have reviews. You just have to keep trying… present yourself as best you can with your profile page, get as many external references as you can… and then keep applying till someone takes a chance on you. We all have to start at zero. Took me 8 applications to get my first sit.

Also you could try applying for some short sits, or last-minute ones, close to where you live, if available, to get a few reviews, before trying for more popular destinations.

Bonne chance and don’t give up!

Hi Valoo, I can totally agree. It‘s really frustrating. :frowning:

Hi there! To get started, we applied for a sit that nobody else wanted ( which was in Buffalo NY USA in January!) That gave us a great review within the THS app. The second one we got because her regular sitter canceled. After that we get accepted for everything.

Tell the pet parent how pretty or fun or happy their pet looks, and let them know if it reminds you of one of your past petsits. That helps!

Do a search on “How to add a link to my forum profile” and follow the instructions. That way we can see your profile and give advice. We live in France, in the central Pyrenees, and sometimes need a housesitter for less than a week, so I would like to see your listing. Look for some short sits (which are less popular) in France to get a few reviews. The fact that you are French and can speak English would be a plus for anglophone home owners – même s’ils parlent français couramment.

Rather than using screenshots and google translate which can be fake, pet owners would probably trust you more if you gave them a link directly to your Nomador profile, if that’s possible.

I’ve added booking.com and the odd other link before to messages that have accompanied an application, but I’m not sure if THS’s system will allow you to include a nomador link in your message, but you could try it and see if it will let you.

^This.

To further elaborate, as relatively new hosts to this platform with a very popular listing, we can afford to be very selective and picky to the point that we only choose from a pool of established 5 star sitters. Although the review system isn’t perfect, it’s an “indicator” and one of several ways to maximize the chances of getting a quality, responsible, trustworthy sitter. And there are lots of sitters out there who you don’t want to trust with your property and pets because you’ve got a lot to lose if things don’t go as planned.

So, as a host with lots of choices, we don’t consider sitters with no review or sit history on the THS platform, because we have better options.

But I have read countless posts about hosts with less desirable properties who can’t find sitters and some are desperate as their trip is right around the corner and they don’t have coverage. I suspect a host in that situation would engage a sitter with no history if the profile is attractive and the video chat promising.

As others have suggested, as per the quote above, you need to seriously consider applying for unattractive sits that you can get to with a minimum of inconvenience and expense, with the primary goal being to establish credibility rather than because you actually want to go to that particular location.

Think of it as investment of your time and money, no different than a college education, to secure that dream job. Once you put that initial amount of work into it, you’ll be good, assuming of course that you do a great job and get those quality reviews that many hosts will accept at face value even if they’re not always entirely accurate.

You can consider saying in your application (or in your listing) that you are a Nomador-sitter and offer to share a link to your profile and your reviews there.

I do that for my LinkedIn-profile. I don’t want to link it directly in my listing for everybody - I offer it in my applications, so only to sits I apply for.
