Not saying it is a scam. But it certainly has elements of an old scam that affects many online freelancers on other sights that usually have paid work. You’re offered something a little too good to be true. You get a check in advance. You deposit the check. Suddenly there is a change, and the person who sent the check asks for some of the money back you arrange a transfer to their account. The check never clears. You are out money. I don’t know how many people fall for it but it happens all the time and if a small percentage of people fall for it, someone somewhere is making money.

No benefit to you for going off-platform. I’d definitely ask them why they want to do this, but I’d be very careful.
