It’s odd because I have a New Yorker subscription, but I logged out of it and was able to access the article anyway although it warned me I was running out of free articles. That made me think that everyone could read a few of their articles per for free as is common with subscription news and magazine sites.

Some sites do this (allow a few free articles), some don’t. I have Apple News & I think sometimes they count stories read there against the “free” count, despite paying something like $30/mo for access.
Regardless, they offered me a great subscription deal for the first year, & because I often enjoy their writing, I subscribed. Too bad they don’t offer you an referral bonus!
