Hi there. A pet parent is cancelling my sit 15 days into a 38 day plan. I am in Greece and live in the UK. I had to rent a car for the sit and it looks unlikely I will be able to get any money back on the car. I am wondering whether to just cut my losses and fly home straight after the sit or stay on longer in alternative accommodation. I am a premium sitter and wonder if anyone can testify to their experience of claiming for accommodation on the sitter cancellation plan. Looking at the Ts and Cs, it appears to be all at the discretion and a goodwill gesture on the part of TH, if they choose to repay costs. I can easily find qualifying accommodation for under $150/a day within a 32 km radius. Does anyone want to share stories of successfully or unsuccessfully claiming on the plan?
Welcome to the forum @LT4me
This thread has some experiences of successful claims -
https://forum.trustedhousesitters.com/t/tried-tested-process-for-premium-insurance-claim/57554
Be aware that the claim is capped at a total of $1500 (or foreign currency equivalent)
$150 is deductible from the total
also you must notify TrustedHousesitters within 24 hours of a Sit being cancelled and provide correspondence that confirms the cancellation.
@LT4me they are cancelling the sit while you are in it? I know if they cancel before the sit starts it needs to be within a time frame but what about once it’s started? Can you afford to stay on if not compensated by insurance?
I hope they have a good reason like they are deathly ill. Puts sitter in such a bad spot. I would ask them to pay for your accommodations for the remainder of the time. They probably won’t but maybe they can put some effort into finding a friend or relative with a guest house. I remember using another type of platform to travel while I had Airbnb guests in my home. All in the same state in the US. If the host did that to me and didn’t pay for lodging since I couldn’t return home till my Airbnb guests left, I would take them to small claims court.. Text messages show a promise of accommodations.
Am pretty sure that the plan will pay out in that case. We’ve claimed successfully on premium and that thread that @Silversitters has linked gives you quite a few examples. Make sure you email support with a screenshot from the HOs within 24 hours of them advising they’re returning and that the sit is cancelled. On the up side, Greece in September is perfect as most people have left! #islandlife
Not a direct answer to your question - but have you looked to see if there are any other sits nearby for the dates you now need ?
You will need to ask THS to amend the end date so that you can apply .
