Hello, we were offered a holiday sit we are not ready to accept because it involves traveling on Christmas day. We communicated that to the HOs, but they still insist we should reconsider. Are we preventing other applicants from applying if we neither accept or decline the sit? Can other applicants still apply and can the homeowners offer the sit to more than 1 applicant or they have to decline us first?
It depends.
Did you apply to the sit, and the owner confirmed you?
Or….were you invited to apply for the sit? If you were simply invited to apply to the sit, and the owner is pressuring you to apply, then you are not blocking any other process.
We applied for the sit and after we discovered the arrival/departure dates we told the HOs that most likely we won’t be able to do their sit… unless we find another sit in a nearby city that starts early December and ends on Christmas or Christmas day. They responded to that by offering us the sit.
Just decline it if it doesn’t work for you.
I would maybe decline with a message along the lines of “We don’t feel comfortable committing before we have another sit arranged in a nearby town in early December. Your home/pet seem lovely, and we would love to look after them if the logistics work out! But we don’t want to make a promise before we know we can keep it, and we also don’t want to hold up your search process for a sitter in the meantime. We’re keeping our eyes out for an early December sit – we’ll reach out again if one comes up, and if you’re still looking for a sitter at that time, we would love to re-pick up the conversation!”
Thank you all for your feedback. The HO messaged that they misunderstood our message and have now withdrawn their offer. The sit is now open to new applications.
