On an unrelated thread, it was posted that sitters may apply for a sit that they don’t want and don’t intend to do even if confirmed for reasons that range from malicious to low self esteem to exploiting the host and using them as a test subject or learning more about them.

The given reasons for a sitter doing this (and my thoughts on each one) are as follows:

1- They don’t like the host so they apply to fill the application que and block other sitters. For someone to do this they must be festering a great deal of anger. At most they could do block one spot, it wouldn’t be very effective.

2- They feel needed and wanted when they are accepted for a sit and then reject the host. Would this really work for a person with such low self esteem and even if it did they may professional help.

3- To test their profile. How does being accepted or rejected for an application to sit provide useful profile feedback as compared to simply asking other members to review their profile and offer suggestions?

4- To see if their presumptions about a host are true. How would applying for a sit one plans to reject accomplish this goal?

Hi everyone,

I’ve moderated several replies which were directed at specific individuals and personal viewpoints rather than the original post. This is pulling attention away from the OP and is starting to escalate the discussion in unhelpful ways.

Please avoid making personal remarks about other members and refrain from critiquing personal opinions. If you’re contributing, make sure your response is directly relevant to the OP’s post and the topic at hand.

Disagreement is fine, but it must remain respectful and focused on ideas, not people.

Thanks.

Jenny

EDIT: If you’d like to discuss anything mentioned in my post above, please drop me a DM rather than replying on the discussion - it’ll be moderated if it doesn’t directly relate to the OP. Thanks 🙂

Ok I read the original post on this and just thought wow, someone with a more imaginative brain than me. I suggest this would be rare, if not infact non existent. Tempest in a teapot I reckon 🤣

Maybe urban myth making…. ? Although there seems to be a belief in a scatter gun approach by some new sitters who apply for dozens (100s) of sits in the hope of it simply being a game of numbers?

The difference there from the scenarios in the first post is that here, the sitter is genuinely looking to confirm at least one sit.

Why do you post on this forum? What are your motivations about posting this specific topic? Just wait, this is relevant!

People have a lot of motivations behind their behavior, and they are notoriously bad at noticing and vocalizing and admitting them.

While for all the examples you have posted here, there is a much more efficient way to fulfill the need that the person is trying to fill, people tend to do the things that are available for them.

Just like you posting on this forum. What are your real motivations? If you want to hep, why dont you actively try to get better at it? If you want to understand, why do you work so hard to make sure that it is clear that you have no change of understanding? I can speculate on the needs you might be fulfilling here, but the thing is, if you already know, you know, and if you dont know, you most likely will deny. I am not saying this to judge you: my intent is to use you as an example of the things that you ask about in your first post.

This is exactly on point. I want to help, and better understand the process by which sitters and hosts interact.

When I read that sitters apply for listings simply because they have malicious intent and want to ruin the hosts chances of finding a sitter, or they apply because rejecting a host feels better, it leaves me with unanswered questions.

Where have you read those statements please Steve, that terrible intent? I’ve never once, ever, seen someone state those intentions. So kind of you to want to help everyone.

A sitter who applies for a host’s posted sit dates with no intention to confirm a sit, whose sole purpose in doing so is to try to prevent them from getting quality applicants has malicious intent (the word “terrible” did not appear in any of my posts related to this matter).

In order for you to make such a statement with any degree of accuracy you’d need to know how much I’ve actually read.

22,000 posts is a fair amount of reading, don’t you think?

Of course, I added the word terrible because that’s what your post reads as, terrible intent. My actual statement, or meaning for you to comprehend, was “I’ve never once, ever, seen someone state those intentions”. What was quoted by another member on another topic in this regard were purely examples not fact. Nobody to my recollection has ever proposed doing or did such things as the examples quoted. So I don’t get your interest in “examples not fact".

There is such a thing as reading too fast. Detail and nuance can be sacrificed

There’s more to reading than 22000 posts on THS forums. That’s unusual behaviour.

I’ve decided to close this discussion as it looks like things are getting off track again.
