Those Little Irritations

Could have, but she had a full glass and refilled it as it was getting low. And it wasn’t chard, my fav.

I agree that is crazy  I usually send one photo so my sitter knows we’re where we said we would be. One message from sitter every other day that everything is ok is all I need.

Not only did I get family pictures – family I have never met, never will, but several pictures of it snowing.

For me it would be beds and bedding… i can’t understand how anyone can sleep on a hard bed - especially if they have hips! The most important feature of a sit for me is a comfotable bed and pillow - I now bring my own top sheet and bkanket as I overheat with a duvet!

Hopefully we all have hips @PussInBoots
Did you mean to say bad hips?

We always travel with our own feather pillows all around the world (an absolute essential like our coffee pot!)They take up a lot of space but we can’t be without. Its extremely rare we are offered pillows as comfy as our own so we never take the risk of leaving them behind!

I rather think that’s the point.

Funnily enough I like a firm bed and softer beds give me terrible backache (and I’m a side sleeper). Everyone’s different.

@UKSITTER1 I agree with yoou in that I like a very firm bed or I risk suffering from back ache. In 42 housesits, only one has had a bed as firm as my own!

I just use a colander and shake it. Seems to work fine.

This thread actually really helped me as a HO to make my Welcome guide better and learned some things to make housesitting better for people that are really simple fixes. Great topic!

No paper towels.
Do they actually wipe all the food spills, plant leaks, cat urp, etc. with fabric towels? Yuk.
Yes, I would go buy some, but I wonder what the HOs do.

@ABGM A home owner without paper towels here: we use dishcloths. Changed and washed every day, or, if a yucky cleaning task, after every use.

But we do have a roll of toilet paper in the kitchen for someone who might prefer using paper.

Or maybe they think we will clean

This is my second sit out of about 20, no top sheet. How is there not a top sheet? And it is a blanket, not a duvet or comforter with a cover that is removeable and washable. I will wash the blanket when done. But really?

aw cmon, who doesn’t like a picture of snow? I thought it was universal that we all enjoy snow scenes

INDUCTION HOBS. !!! They have become the bane of my house sitting existence.

Some you must place a pan on a ring first, some you don’t.

Some have a Boost facility, some don’t. Each brand is different.

today’s house, you have to press down on a part of central slider magnetic disk closest to your desired ring, then turn this slider clockwise to choose heat setting. (thanks NEFF)

I had to phone owner, who struggled to describe it to me, but her son then texted me in simple words. I persevered, and was able to cook perfect scrambled eggs.

The eagle eyed amongst you will notice 2 different pans. I started with her pan, containing only water, to check ring was working, then used my own pan which I always take in case I cannot get pan properly cleaned after, or even worse, burnt!

Yes, and not all pans work on all induction hobs! We used to travel with very lightweight little pan and oftentimes it wouldn’t work, too light, or the wrong material, to activate the hob!

Yes. It has to have a magnetic base

Much of this thread seems to be an illustration of how people in different places just do things differently. Irritating as that may be for people from other places.

But perhaps everyone can agree on … dirty microwaves!
I don’t have one, in part because it’s one more thing to clean, and I’m reeeallly tired of cleaning micros that have splatters all over the inside and/or smell like the last 3 things that were cooked in them. Blecchhh.
