Totally gutted. First time we have had to cancel a sit

This is not really a question more of a “guilt post” We have just had to cancel sits as my wife had a fall and was taken to hospital. Thankfully nothing broken but she’s incapacitated and in pain (she’s good with pain and built up tolerances from being married to me for 43 years ) so it’s not practical for us to do our upcoming sits. The home owners have been great about it but I still feel guilty letting them down.

Geez I hope we never have to cancel sits ever again.

Don’t beat yourself up about it. Accidents happen.

My one and only cancellation was a six week sit in the wilds of Costa Rica - think two plane rides and a long car journey on dirt tracks. Two weeks into the sit we had a death in the family (grandchild) and had to leave. The host was so good and arranged a neighbour to come in till she found someone else. THS stepped up to the mark as well and helped us both. I think hosts realise tragedies/accidents happen and the good ones have a plan B. Hope your wife gets better soon.

You know you have done the right thing as your wife’s health is the most important thing at this time. Your hosts would understand this as you have an amazing track record with THS. Yes, it’s very disappointing to cancel for the first time but we all know life throws up some challenges.
Wishing Mrs Oztravels a speedy and thorough recovery.

Life happens. :poop: There’s nothing we can do about that, except be honest and communicate it as soon as possible with the other people involved. It’s part of the game. Life is unpredictable.
Feeling guilty is inevitable, but it says a lot about who you are.

Wishing your wife a speedy recovery. Emergencies happen. No one would choose to be injured, so no need to feel guilty.

@Oztravels, hoping that your wife’s health improves quickly. Take care of yourselves :hugs:. As others have noted, sometime life happens - for both pet parents and housesitters.

Take care and be well.

Yes, life happens - I’ve had to cancel strings of sits twice -

First time was during prevaccine covid - traveling to the UK from the US and just to be sure I was tested a few days before leaving the US and came up positive - so I’d have been quarintined on arrival - this way I was able to give the first HOs a week’s notice. They understood as did those following who had longer notice.

The second was when I had to have surgery - fortunately I knew about 3 weeks out so was able to give ample notice - again the HOs understood.

It does work both ways - I’ve had HOs who have had to cancel sits for various reasons - illness, a bunch as the world shut down at the beginning of covid (including 1 who offered to let me come anyhow and take her boyfriend’s apartment if I couldn’t change my travel plans - a 5* HO to be sure!).

So sorry this happened to your wife! No guilt. Stuff happens. As I say this as a homeowner (and a sitter). It’s the nature of things.

That’s awful for you both but completely understandable to cancel your sits. Wishing your wife a speedy recovery so that you will be back to it again soon.

Thank you everyone for you thoughts and support. A few weeks at home to convalesce and we will be back on the “sitting horse” The lifestyle we love.

Hi @Oztravels

Unfortunately, I know exactly how your wife feels as I took a fall down some stairs in Norway a week ago, and have broken my leg so I completely empathise with her. Wishing your wife a speedy recovery. :mending_heart:

Hi, I have just had to cancel all our upcoming sits. I know how you feel but I have had poor results from medical tests and have no idea what the future holds. Better to cancel now than later. I have paused my membership until I know more. I hope your wife is recovering well.
