I have been using the owners landrover which they insured me on as they were keen for me to walk the dog in a particular place and also live down a bumpy track. The fuel tank now needs filling and I realise I should have checked if I or they are covering the cost. I’ve been using my own car to do my own errands etc and their’s for most of the dog walks. If there wasn’t the requirement to drive elsewhere and it was up to me, then I wouldn’t be concerned but filling up a landrover is expensive and walking the dog elsewhere was their preference. Should I just ask upfront if they are happy to reimburse me? I’m not sure how to phrase the question or what approach to take. Thanks!
I think you can basically just say what you’ve said here; you’re using your own car for errands etc and only using their vehicle for dog walks to the area that they specified.
“We probably should have clarified this before the sit, but have you left any cash for a gas refill?”

Its not a sit i would have taken on tbh, but personally, if they ask you to walk the dogs in a specific area, using their vehicle then they should foot the fuel bill.
Asking for that and their response will be interesting however.
For me, it depends on the distance to the specific area. You specify a landrover so I’m guessing its not too efficient. When I’ve used HO’s car (fairly often) its for errands and some sightseeing, taking the dog for interesting walks, and usually back to the airport to swap it out on my departure, I’ll usually fill the tank. But in your case I think it make sense to ask for gas money as you are using your own car for your things.

Definitely they should be paying for the fuel.
Don’t know how much longer you have on your Sit.
If you don’t need much fuel to get by until the Sit is over, you could just put a little bit of fuel in the tank, so that if the Owner balks, you are not out much money.
Or…fill the tank and ask them to Venmo you for reimbursement. “Your car was on empty so I filled it with fuel. Do you use Venmo? Here is my handle: XX. It cost XX to fill the tank.”
Most people would thank you and send the money.
Do you have a sense for the Owners? Are they generous or tightwads?
