Food left for Sitters

I have started mentioning the fridge prior to sits.

Thank you for bringing this up- have yet to not have to clean our/throw our sitter things left behind. Nothing major- nor would it be a complaint. It happens and isn’t “disrespectful “.

I literally guarantee you’ll find expired things in everyone’s fridge, or things that should’ve been turfed. Of course, It’s a good reminder to scan your fridge before you leave the house for weeks and turf things that might be sketchy or have gone off . A. fridge should not be disgusting, nor should cook services or microwaves, but I read through some of these posts and I think “good Lord.” , That’s a bit picky.
it makes me anxious thinking “have I sorted out my spices lately” ! :joy::roll_eyes:.

I spent a great deal of effort fretting over making the house ready for a sitter, literally a stranger. Of course, I’d want you to be comfortable in my home! However, as a busy working professional, there may be things that I forget, or miss and I certainly hope there would be some flexibility on a sitter choosing us, in that regard. I have been lucky with the sitters I’ve had, that’s not been an issue.

I have a clean, usually spotless home. But I do have a pet, a cat. We work, and are busy and this is not the same as an air Bnb. I just like with any company I would want the space clean. I leave basics for all sitters. I’ve inquired if there’s anything they’d like me to pick up so they don’t have to get groceries first day. I don’t require they do full on house maintenance.

There are some of these responses here that seem a little over the top in expectation both directions. I guess all one can do is pick each other as best matches for personality and expectations.

I’ve only had four sits by 2 sitters who have chosen to return. So not a lot of experience. I endeavour to treat sitters as I would to have any guest in my home. However, the expectation of sitters is higher as they are doing a job as opposed to a guest.

In return, I do try to make sure things are as organized and clear as possible. However, there are things that are going to be overlooked or missed. It’s life.

To be clear: A fridge should not be chock full of a science projects, I think all are agreed. If you’re having someone come in your home to care for your pets and your home, a quick scan before leaving should reveal the things that should be dealt with.

I have noticed the same! I don’t know if this is some secret wealth code, but the fanciest and most extravagant houses I have sat in have invariably had a mouldy lemon (or lime) in the fridge, and often sauces and condiments with an added layer of fluff on top.

100% am sure your home is at least on par with good HO behaviour.
As you say in your second post, it’s about taking 10 min to toss “science projects.”
As for the spices - that wasn’t meant as a “must do” but more a PSA to remind people that over buying food is often wasteful. I only learned about spices fading fairly recently - wanted to pass it along!

What do you say, Kelly? How do you say it? It’s so delicate to mention things without offending people or sounding condescending.

I’m interested too in learning how you broach the subject of refrigerators with HO @KellyK :cowboy_hat_face:

I mention in my sitter profile that I appreciate clean homes and fridge and freezer space.
