Good first overseas sit for a solo sitter

Do you speak French, or need to?

We second that @Colin we love Amsterdam and it would be a great first overseas sit for @MarieHuggins :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you @Samox24

@MarieHuggins as @andrealovesanimals mentioned, Ireland would also be a good choice, we completed a road trip there both before and after finishing a sit in Ireland this summer so if you need any help planning just DM me. We especially loved County Cork, County Kerry and County Mayo, the scenery was rugged and stunning! :ocean:

Iceland in summer–Lucky duck!

Funnily enough, shopkeepers would speak to me in Icelandic and be surprised to find that I’m not a local. Guess I have the coloring/look.

Hi Katie!

You’re right. I got very lucky. I’d practically given up hope of ever getting a sit in Iceland. Every time I’d see one, it was already at the reviewing applicants stage but I managed to get in there finally this year and luckily for me twice! On the second visit, I fulfilled a lifelong dream of seeing the emerald northern lights dancing across the night sky! An unforgettable sight .

You must have that lovely Scandinavian look if you’re blending in like a local!

Mine too. I’ve waited thirty years to see them and they didn’t disappoint!

I’ve never ever seen the Aurora in the UK. I met a lovely older couple from the north east of England who arrived in Reykjavík after me. They were so eager to catch the lights, they were taking lots of Northern lights night cruises night after night and getting battered by the high seas and not seeing a thing. The irony is they found out the lights had shown their magnificence in Whitley Bay just down the road from where they live back home only the night before! Just goes to show there can sometimes be the magic we’re searching for in our own backyards!!!

How true that is @Chatsetchiens

Nah. Celtic. Short. Fair skin, dark hair, lightish eyes. But apparently that’s predominantly the Icelandic DNA. They’re not tall compared to Swedes, etc.

Iceland is awesome. I was lucky to get a sit there last Christmas. It was my first visit there and yes, everyone spoke perfect English.

I love reading all the replies. However, it makes me, as an American, truly wish I lived in Europe. You all just have so many amazing opportunities and options for travel. Enjoy! I will live vicariously through you.

So expensive though……

@Cuttlefish I have not done any pet sits in Slovenia (I’ve never actually looked ) but found it to be a very dog friendly country. Even if I never found a sit there in the future I would still recommend. When I was there you could find comfortable lodging for 50 euro a night and a large meal on average is about 6 euro. Hopefully the prices of things have t changed too much. For those based Europe it’s a great option for a long weekend getaway.

@MarieHuggins , you’ll find many people speak English all over but when you go shopping for food, much of the packaging will be in the language of the country you’re in. Put Google Translate on your phone, press the camera icon and hold it over the label, and the app will translate it. This is extremely helpful. You can try it at home with signs written in other languages.

You’re absolutely right. I remember when I was out taking the dog for a walk, sometimes children would approach me and speak to me in Icelandic. I’d say “Sorry, I don’t speak Icelandic” and they’d immediately switch over to perfect English and it turns out they were just asking me if they could pet the dog! The standard of these children’s English was just amazing! I was so impressed.

Glad you got the chance to go there as sits in Iceland tend to fill up within minutes. My highlights were seeing the aurora and going in the Sky lagoon. Looking out across the Atlantic with a view of the mountains whilst sitting in those incredible geothermal waters was something quite special for me. I’d love to know what your highlights from Iceland were if you feel like sharing.

Thanks for putting Slovenia on our radar. I’d never considered there to be honest and Wow! 6 euros for a decent meal. That’s SO impressive! I must confess that I’m sometimes whinging about the way prices of everything have absolutely skyrocketed in the UK so knowing that it’s possible to get so much value for such an affordable price at least somewhere on this beautiful planet definitely puts a smile on my face!

I saw that one too. It looks great. I’m too much of a wimp in the cold though for Iceland at that time of year! I struggle enough in Scotland in Winter. Definitely a great opportunity though for the right person!
