How are you doing with the cold weather in UK?

How are you doing @Twogreys
Did you contact the hosts and have things improved for you at all?

Hi, we have hunckered down and used our jackets during the day, hot water bottles and blankets in the bedroom. Suddenly the bedroom radiator came on at 3am for an hour then nothing since. Decided to just put down to an experience (Will be in our review though) as we are finishing soon. Thanks for asking

Thanks for the update but that sounds like a pretty miserable experience

I’m sorry to hear your experience has been like this.

Unfortunately, it’s something I’ve learned the hard way but I think I will now be asking about heating during video calls going forward whenever doing sits in the UK during the colder months. As someone who has lived in England in various places and also done sits, this is one of the most difficult things to deal with, the discomfort of cold. And I understand the complexity of reasons behind it so I wouldn’t ever point fingers and blame people, but I think it’s something worth asking, what the heating is like in the house, what are the average temperatures, is it possible to adjust to higher, etc. And then you have the option to choose whether that’s something you can live with. Because I realised that some people truly are fine 17-18 degrees celsius inside the home but for me, personally, that’s not something I am too comfortable with. So it’s always best to ask, which I never used to do before.

This is a very interesting conversation to me. We sat in the UK in February and the HO’s were quite concerned we not be cold. Went to lengths to explain how to boost the heating, hot water bottles available etc. Note we come from a hot climate where heating is rarely required. We were comfortably warm the entire time, often kicking the duvet off at night. In our travels we frequently found the level of bedding exceeded our needs and just slept under sheets. We were more often too hot due to Europe not yet coming to terms with their warming climate. Do you have a fan was our main question

I’m resident in Madrid which, as the second highest European capital, can have very cold winter weather. I also have a home in UK and am interested to read about sitters’ experiences with staying warm. Choosing carefully applies on this front too! I’ve housesat where the day after the Home Owners left the snow arrived.. big game changer… then the boilerā€ diedā€.. even bigger game changer! I managed to get it started up again( long story) and the Home owners were thrilled to cancel a plumber call out!

This photo would attract me to a winter sit in UK. If the pets are warm and happy, sitters should be too!

In the Bleak Mid winter.. Heat ON!

I’ve been baking a cake to keep warm - forecast minus 5 tonight. With only a balloon whisk for whisking egg whites and whipping up cream, I was breaking into a sweat despite Arctic conditions in the kitchen!

Best advice is to keep moving. I enjoyed a magical walk through a winter wonderland yesterday, blessed to cross paths with some deer, who locked eyes with me before gracefully bobbing away into the depths of the woodland.

An electric blanket that you can leave on all night is a fantastic way of heating the human, rather than the house. It’s like sleeping inside a giant toasted sandwich maker.

Such practical advice as well as a beautiful moment shared in Nature. This is pet sitting at its best! We don’t want to ā€œfleeceā€ anyone but must keep ourselves warm.

It’s a basic need for all animals!

I’ve had magical deer encounters where each of us has stared back in disbelief and awe. Unforgettable joy. Thanks for sharing!

Oh to be in England now the..oh wait….

My whole extended family have gone down with the so called super flu in the UK over the last month. Not pleasant. It’s like getting the worst food poisoning combined with a bad flu. I was wiped out for 2 weeks.
Best avoided.
