Absolutely agree 100%. No need to explain our lives to others. As long as it pleases us, that’s all that matters.
Quite simply in my opinion, people are obsessed with money and a lot of people won’t do anything unless paid.

Sometimes you can’t. I lost a friend because of it, a friend who used to look up to me but lost all respect? or interest? (or something) due to my unexplainable “entrepreneurial activity”.
Are you a gardener in Colombia? 
It doesn’t sound like you come from a family/friend group of explorers/travellers…my family travels robustly so the benefits are quite evident as we all know how much it costs to pay for accommodations when traveling.
I also wonder if they’re animal lovers?..many of mine are not but they know that I am so the fact that I get to do two things that I love which is travel and be with animals is a no brainer for them to wrap their heads around. They may prefer to just book a paid accommodation but also get how not having to pay for accommodation in exchange for watering some plants and feeding cats makes absolute sense from a cost-savings-benefit perspective depending on the type of travel one does. If I were a digital nomad who explored the world, it would probably be an even easier sell as I’m getting to go to new places at the price of my travel to get there.
I find though that many people who just aren’t travellers or globally-minded struggle with understanding how life could look another way. It boggles my mind thought that they wouldn’t be able to wrap their head around the fact that you pay nothing for living expenses in exchange for keep animals company so idk about that one. Personally, I would stop trying to explain and say I do what’s working for me, congratulations on your bills and expensive trips…I’ll continue to optimise my wallet in my own way.

I’ve had people baffled that I don’t get let food, and have to pay my own travel expenses. They don’t “get” that I get to stay in locations of my own choosing, with gorgeous pets, with no accommodation costs. I leave them in their bafflement and carry on enjoying (mostly!) my sits.

I just say I do it for fun. If I were to be paid it would be a job and not fun for me anymore. Maybe its my social circle, but everyone seems to get it and lots of people ask if they can do it too. I tell them only if they truly love animals.

I believe this platform is not intended to make money. It is kind of a “give and take” system so it is not actually free for both parties. Am I right?

i get the same thing especially from my adult children , especially when i tell them what i do while on a sit. i even second guess myself!

Yes, you are correct. Sitters will care for your pet and/or home in exchange for the opportunity to stay in your home. No cash changes hands
There is one exception to this rule. Home hosts are allowed to to ask for a contribution towards the utility bills. However, this rarely happens and when it does happen it greatly reduces the number of sitters that will apply as most sitters think this rule is unfair.
