Hi @KChev in the review narrative did the thsitter make mention of why 4 stars for cleanliness?
Did you happen to ask the sitter post review what was behind the 4*?
Did you comment on the review?
Do you mention a clean home but not pristine in your listing?
I ask only because you seem realistic about the 4* and possibly why and its not so much a bad thing but an expectation for your home not to be misinterpreted.
I didn’t mention anything about the level of cleanliness in the listing because I didn’t know that many sitters are comparing homes to airbnb’s.
The sitter stayed on for a couple of days after we returned. We had some meals together and interesting discussions. I mentioned that her review would be our first and that she should be honest because our place is not for everyone and we want people to have an accurate impression of this rural environment, which can look paradisical from the photos. But rural life involves dust and critters and woodsmoke and spiders galore. We left it tidy for her but from where I’m sitting I can see cobwebs in the rafters, smears on the window where the cat pokes his nose waiting to be let in and a film of dust on the veluxes because the wind has been blowing fine silt from the Sahara for the last couple of days.(We’re in the Pyrenees.) I didn’t need to ask her about the missing star. If she’d given us 5 stars I would’ve thought, OK we did enough. But now we’ll do a bit extra for before the next sitter.
When I compare our old place which was a 400 year old converted Barn with our pristine minimalist apartment by the sea it’s like comparing chalk and cheese! I totally get where you’re coming from- our old place had a constant stream of people saddles sports kit teenagers dogs etc traipsing in and out. We had squirrels and bats in the roof and mice lived under the floorboards. Was it clean? Well it was hygienic enough for us as a family and guests loved the place- they adapted over the years I suppose. Our current place is Magazine standard spotless but it’s easy to keep that way - just us an older retired couple in it and no more wet saddles or horse rugs on the banisters!
Just FTR, @BillyBonnieBenji, the only cleaning I mention is in my welcome guide, and it’s “if you have time, strip the bed and put the linens on the downstairs landing.” I do not mention cleaning in the responsibilities section of my listing, partially because we have a weekly cleaning service and the house is more or less clean all the time. A sitter would have to be basically leaving spills unwiped and dishes in the sink to leave the house actually dirty, and it feels disrespectful to call that level of detail out. I guess I could add to the responsibilities “tidy up after yourself”, but it never occurred to me that a sitter who wasn’t explicitly told to do that would think that might mean I have low standards myself.
Oh god no, I would never assume a lack of cleaning details in the Responsibilities section meant the HO had low standards… not at all. I just don’t mind seeing a list of stuff. Yes, a short sentence as you suggest would be fine.
