run.
Well done!
Good luck with your new sit.
You’ll love it, we got into this because we missed having pets around too, but we loved it so much straight away, we ended up doing it full time within months. It’s brilliant, hope you have a fantastic first sit.
Most of our sits have been 1-3 weeks long, and we have never been asked to purchase toilet paper, laundry soap, toiletry items. How ridiculous!!
Owner is getting 10 days of pet and home care.
How much could one person use in 10 days? Maybe $10 USD worth of the above items? Sheesh. Think it through, owners!
We have bought liquid soap dispensers when there was no soap at the kitchen and bathroom sinks, and we have bought toilet paper when it was running low. Not a big deal. But owners should try to stock up on these things. It is simply good manners to make your sitters feel appreciated. Your hospitality will be reciprocated!
I would not do this sit under these conditions. Not use dishes would that also include using saucepans etc. for cooking asnything, also. And no toilet paper? It is high;y likely they will not let you even nuse salt and pepper also. It sounds a very unwelcome guide to me and I would imagine things can only get worse if you start the sit. You could turn up and they then say, oh I expected you to bring your own bedding etc. Just give it a miss.
I must ask, what’s in it for you? Totally unacceptable. There was a sitter on the forum that I just recently read. This sounds like her homeowner! She had read through the lines of the previous reviews and knew that she had to take toilet paper, etc. She wrote an unfavorable review for the HO. The HO responded that she didn’t think she should be responsible for any of those things. I’m not sure what their idea of a fair exchange is. Also, there were no cleaning supplies, etc., and the house was not clean. The excuse was ‘I ran out of time”! I read a home owners comment once that said…clean like your mother is coming and have supplies like your best friend will be staying with you for a while. As a sitter, I love that saying!! Please do yourself a hugh favor and decline this sit!
Great decision @TTD Can you tell us how the owner took this feedback?
As others have said you have grounds for cancelling this sit. You say you feel uneasy, and it’s not great to turn up at a sit feeling that way. I would message the owner and explain that you feel very unwelcome having received the guide and that things have been disclosed that you didn’t sign up for. Only the owner can cancel you so ask her to do that. You should also get in touch with THS to explain the issues.
Sorry, I should have read the whole thread as I see you’ve cancelled. Enjoy the replacement sit!
Run for the hills, and don’t look back!
You dodged a bullet by canceling. If more sitters and hosts would take heed of red flags, they’d spare themselves of sits gone wrong. We often hear about ugly situations on the forum and Facebook group because red flags are ignored or overlooked, unfortunately.
I have done pet sitting, both paid and none paid, for a long time although I’ve only done them for free on THS around 40 times. From my experience these are not very welcoming directives whether I was being paid or not. However, since it’s THS and the intent is to put two parties together who can create a mutual exchange based on trust and caring for people and pets, I’d definitely pass on this one. Not much caring or trust going on. I mean, why can’t you use the gym equipment. There are so many awesome HOs you can sit for out there who will meet you halfway, but many more who’ll go out of their way to making you feel welcome and comfortable in their homes, so you don’t need to risk your time and enjoyment with someone like this.
I think the host is horrible. I NEVER ask a sitter to pay for any of those items. I would expect them to be persnickety and cheap about everything. Can you get out of the sit? If not, perhaps you should tell them your expectations. They are getting free pet sitting. You have the right to have expectations.
I hope you cancelled… this is a huge red flag
