Other House Sitting Sites

It’s possible and I will go as far to say that for me, where I am physically, emotionally and mentally would not have been possible had I not made THiS choice.
I don’t take that for granted.
Ever.
You seem like a very interesting person. It’s nice to have you here.

Well, thank you @Amparo: I can’t comment on the interesting but I can certainly be dense. I thought you were really off to the beach :woman_facepalming:t3:

We are also considering Nomador

Nomador has a rating system on answers, you know if owners answer or not, but you don’t know if they’ve read your listing…
Anybody (owners or sitters) can delete a comment they don’t like, so of course you see only positive comments !!
Homes are not all very nice, and owners are not obliged to pay to publish (but then they are limited ). This has been done to avoid pets abandons during holidays
Sitters have the choice between different prices (it depends how many sits they want to do per year)
Adverts are quite short, only subscribers can see some listings (reserved to subscribers who pay)

.

Doesn’t sound brilliant from your description. While THS has its issues I feel it’s still the best site in so many ways

I’m also member of Nomador which has many listings in France. For us interesting living in the Netherlands. This sites works in parts differently than TH but once you understand this you can have good results.
I agree it is strange you can decide to not publish a review when you don’t like it. But, on the last day of the sit both the HO and sitter are invited to review the other party. You can see in the listing how many completed sits a HO has got. When you then look at the profile and, say, they had 5 sits, and just one review from sitter…red flag?? So there are ways to find out.
We did several lovely sits through Nomador and I think the quality of the houses are not bad, on all websites there are different standards in houses.
Listings can be as short or extensive as HO’s decide with possibility of many pictures. And of course there also people list with just one picture of outside of house or the kittycat (or sometimes none at all). For me a no go, I than feel a kind of disrespect towards the sitters. When they go on holiday I’m sure they want to see the hotel from inside out and not just the key to their room
TH and N together bring balance in the sits that are offered and works well for me…

This site is international (listings are published in french, english or german) but many french owners publish in french and it’s not translated

the french team is rather desappointing : you can never reach anybody by phone (there is no telephone given, no hot line), only by mail and the answer is not quick
I wanted to ask for help once in Spain as I faced an issue (owner’s attitude towards me during the 2 days before she left ) and got none…
For sure some adverts give detailed informations but not all…
Sometimes the texts are very short, with few photos.
Obviously there is no team behind to check the listings follow the rules

Price is low : free for discovery (you can still apply), 29€ per quarter, 74 € per year (then you’re a confident member)
Some owners reserve their photos only to confident subscribers

What other house or pet sitting programs do people belong to and like?
It seems THS is very popular these days for sitters and we want to branch out and see other sites.
We sit primarily in the US but also internationally. Since we are nomadic we prefer long sits and have certain living requirements like decent kitchen and comfy bed for 2 people. I joined Rover but it seems more dog oriented and we also like to see the house before we commit.
Anyone have any recommendations?

I’ve enjoyed reading the posts on this topic. I am a homeowner who often looks for sitters (anywhere from 3-5 times a year.). I started out with housesitters of American and was quite pleased with them. One of the sitters I found from that site (who has become a friend) recommended THS when I was having some trouble finding sitters. I generally use THS now and have been happy with them, however, when I have trouble finding someone I then post on housesitters of America. I just feel happy that there are places that I can use to find folks to take care of cats, fish and home (along with bird feeders that provide TV for the cats when they go into their Catio.

Does anyone know of housesit sites in Norway?

We will be there for three months from mid July. We have one sit 99% , just waiting on final confirmation from the owner and are actively looking for more now.

We would also be interested in some tips from Scandinavia, I’m actually from there but my flat is rented out. I have alerts for the few sits that exist in the area but the 5 application limit is reached almost immediately, sometimes even in winter when you have almost continual darkness. It seems to be quite an unknown concept and I couldn’t find a term in my own language to describe it. It might be helpful to be on all the big platforms (have a look on housesitsearch) + have a look at Facebook posts (but here also you need to be very quick).
PS: Pawshake etc. also exists in Norway etc. In my experience there are a lot more paid sits in some countries since the concept of a “free” exchange is almost unheard of in some places. The caveat is: you should already be in the country and available to meet in person.

Thanks for that @Timmy . The one we’re applying for is the only one in our time frame I’ve seen so far , but I’m sure more will come up closer to the time. At least we will be in the same time zone then which will make it a bit easier to get applications in before the 5 limit!
I haven’t found any Facebook groups so far, but will have a look at Pawshake when we are in Norway.

I also joined Nomadoor (twice, in fact) because we are French/US citizens and planning to spend a year or more based in France last year (which we did do and wound up with 3 sits in the EU all through THS)
I searched often for sits in France via the site and just got so discouraged at the lack of photos, info, reviews, etc. Especially the lack of photos.
I applied for only a couple sits through them - ones with actual photos - but didn’t get the sits.
I wish it was a better site with stricter policies regarding photos and info. We are often in Europe so it would be nice to have more options.
We are fluent in French so the language is a non issue. Too bad the site is not great.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this topic.
