How does that differ from giving your keys to a stranger who isn’t local? They could come and find the local stranger easier than the non-local.
in theory the stranger isn’t going to have any local support to clean out the house vs a local could. a local may also be interested in a place to throw parties so they don’t have to do it at their house. and I can think of many other scenarios. there’s a reason many hotels won’t rent to locals. it tends to lead to trouble. not saying it’s right, but sitters here are just humans, not saints. there are both good and bad ones. we can’t assume that just because we wouldn’t do something doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t.
Good point!
A local can copy the keys and give them to someone else local. Not saying this is a likely scenario but it’s how some people think.
UPDATE ON THIS: I contacted the homeowners who in fact did have a bad experience with a local sitter who had guests over. They wanted to chat with me about doing the sit but I had no interest in this sit other than the fact of why they didn’t want local sitters. THS - can you close this posting now? Thanks!
I recently applied for a sit in the region of where I used to live. The wife contacted me immediately, said her husband was out of town and we could video chat in a few days. Then I get declined. This is a winter sit, in northern area, in suburbs. I just needed to be near my old city to get routine check ups etc. There is only one applicant. I have 5 star sits. After reading this, I am wondering if they were worried about me. Since I will be nomadic at that time. Because I couldn’t figure it out.
I think you would be well within your rights to politely ask if there was a reason you were declined, given things seemed to be progressing and you were planning a video chat. I would want to know, rather than wondering why the sudden change of heart.
especially since they only have 1 applicant, based on the listing.
Done! Thanks for the update
