And then there are HOs who place listings actually expecting a sitter to travel back and forth to their home twice a day to feed the cat, clean the litterbox, and water the plants and garden. For no accommodation in return… just for the love of animals.
I’ve also seen listings that while within the rules (offering accommodation in exchange for services), are outrageously high maintenance. Ones where I would have loved spending time with that pet, but didn’t want to spend 2 weeks completing all the daily chores and duties demanded by the HO. They honestly expect us to be housecleaners, personal assistants, gardeners, maintenance staff… anything else, boss?? Then they tell you the pet can’t be alone for more than an hour at a time. Well, it can take a lot longer than that to just run out to get groceries!!
This knife cuts both ways. Trust me. Everyone just needs to remember that this is supposed to be reciprocal. HOs are not just providing free accommodation to moochers. Sitters are providing services that you would otherwise have to pay for… with the additional benefit of not just popping in once or twice a day to dump food in a bowl and leave. We keep your pet company, play with them, snuggle with them, watch out for them, make them feel comfortable and safe; allow them to keep to their familiar routine. Surely that should count for something if you love your pet?
It’s a gamble with every sit, to differing degrees, even when HOs and sitters try to be transparent. Like everyone has differing standards of clean or not. (I say that as someone more obsessive than most folks and I try to remember that when I end up at sits that aren’t as clean as I’d like.) I also think sometimes HOs also lose sight of how much work their pet(s) is, because they’ve grown used to it.
My next sit is with a pet that’s been really sick previously and I’m reading up to try to prepare in case the condition resurfaces. Hoping for the best, but want to have some idea of how to care for him, if he has a turn for the worse. Going into it, hard to tell whether this sit will end up stressful or not. Or whether I’ll get the shorter end of things through no one’s fault.
Isn’t that against the terms of THS?
Yes it is!
Hi @belluca @Lokstar the listing you’re referring to has been passed over to the Membership Services Team
in the sitter’s profile you can’t see a sitting without review (in the app). The sit is only shawn in the profile of the host, with or without review.
Edited to comply with posting guidelines.
You are mistaken, here is a screenshot from our sitters profile on the App showing a sit we did when the home host did not leave us a review
And here is a screenshot from the same sitters profile on the App when the home host did leave a review
@Colin - can hosts see the same thing as you ?
It has been stated on the forum that host’s don’t see what we as sitters see on our own profile ?
Good point - maybe @Angela_L will be able to shed some light on that?
@Silversitters I took a look at @Colin 's profile in the app, and I (a host) cannot see, that there is a review missing.
@CatsAndDog That is interesting - we only had one home host that did not leave a review - Susan ( Boston) can you see all the others?
The blank one comes between Sarah (Chippenham) and Georgina ( Watford)
Yes @Colin , I can see all the other, but there’s no gap or any indication of a missing review between Sarah and Georgina. No mention of Susan at all
@Angela_L @Ben-ProductManager - is this correct? This non-disclosure to home hosts of the number of times a prior home host has chosen not to leave a review following their sitter’s departure surely needs looking into urgently!
The only caveat I can think of is that this particular home host that we sat for is no longer a member of THS - I wonder if this could be the reason their details have been removed from our profile, but if that is the case, why is it still visible to me?
Hi @Colin
Angela is off line at the moment. I will pass this on to @Ben-ProductManager as I unfortunately don’t know the answer.
Hi @Colin
We will look into this as we are currently working on reviews. Thanks for raising this.
Thanks, Ben
@Colin Your two pics show what YOU see on your own profile but not what others see when looking at your profile. They will only see the 2nd pic- when you have received your review. They won’t see the review request page and they will not see that you did the sit at all if you don’t get a review!
I’ve seen this multiple times especially with one particular (horror!) sit we did that I have been monitoring from time to time. Unfortunately 3 more sitters have done the same sit after us and like us, none gave feedback and none received reviews. When I click on each of those three sitters they all have reviews for other sits before and after that sit but nothing shows for the dates of the sit in question. Its like the sit did not exist for them. I’m assuming it would be the same if someone viewed our profile.
That’s what people are complaining about here. All missing feedbacks show on host profiles (on the app at least) but missing reviews for sitters do not. Only you can see your own missing reviews on your profile.
I just want to add my 2 cents to this fabulous thread!
Firstly, I love animals and am obsessed with my own cat. I’m mainly a Cat sitter, but will take small pups too. I’m also OCD about their safety, happiness and comfort while I am with them. I’ve been sitting privately with great success for 4+ years, before joining TH and Sitting runs in my family. So that disclaimer is out there - I am an animal lover for sure! And am grateful that that gift and skill set has allowed me to also meet amazing humans and stay in beautiful places.
Now for my rally: I would say it goes both ways at this point - as a Sitter, I see HOs posting normal, untidy homes or apartments, strewn with children’s toys, clothes on the floor, clutter, etc. in non-notable places like regular random suburbs or cities that no one would have reason to want to visit - for a 1-3 days sit, often with no previous sitters.
They are just seeking free sitters, which IMO is fair I guess because it’s technically allowed by TH, but also annoying because you can tell they aren’t spending time trying to make their home seem inviting, and by lack of significant dates & last minute postings, you can tell they are essentially trying to find free pet care. Whether it’s because they are actually in need (maybe their normal paid sitter had to bail in emergency) or they have had an emergency - I understand, you try to be resourceful in those moments and TH may provide assistance.
But I’m sure there are also folks who try to find free pet sitters just to have free care, but it’s like - what is the benefit for us? Why would we want to stay in your cluttered apartment in Random City for 2 days? It’s just weird. I sit for free on here in exchange for beautiful experiences.
When I sit in my own hometown and surrounding local areas, I get paid.
I’m not trying to be a negative nancy and am by nature very optimistic - but I wanted to counter the original post because it does go both ways on here 100%.
So far however, I’ve loved my sits, the HOs I’ve met and the animals too! I was sad just yesterday when I had to say goodbye to 2 loving cats after 3 weeks together!
Happy Sitting & Happy Travels~
Sure, but it is probably what I will be doing next spring/summer on a cycling tour through England. Random rural villages, creatures great and small.
In many places I won’t stay long I think, and I will live with it if the place is cluttered and just get fish & chips for dinner.
@pietkuip just wanted to step in (completely off topic) and say hi to a fellow cycle tourer. We just finished part of EV15 and are now sitting in Brussels. We always try to top and tail our tours with sits.
