Sorry I was AWOL
Hope it went well. #crazyweek
Thanks. I am sorry I missed the meeting. We have been busy off the grid on a small ship cruise in Alaska. I hope to join next time.
Hi Jess! (@hitchedandhiking) Et al.
I apologize for not replying sooner. It reminds me of some socks I have. They say,
“If a man says he will fix it, there’s no need to remind him EVERY 6 MONTHS.”

I did enjoy “The Housesitter’s Guide to the Galaxy.” It was so different from my own life. And still practical. And I loved all your personal stories.
However, I technically can’t review the book on Amazon, even though I bought it there with a gift certificate. I normally boycott Amazon, and their system won’t let me review your book. (“You must have spent $50 on Amazon.com, using a credit or debit card, in the past 12 months.”) All that to encourage others who can review your book on Amazon to still do so, in my stead. ![]()
Also, I did have some questions I never got to ask. <checks notes from 6 months ago> I’ll limit it to 3
:
- The book is “for Derek who always encouraged fun and adventure.” Who is that?
- In Chapter 8 (High Steaks), you tell a story about rescuing a calf from water. What happened to the calf? I couldn’t tell how long he survived.
- What would you add/change to the book now? (feel free to be succinct/long)
I’ll send you a DM now, too.
–Geoff
Hi Geoff,
Thanks for your message! I’m glad you enjoyed the book.
Love your questions and curiosity.
- Derek is my Father-in-Law who passed away the year my book was published, and he was such an inspiration for Tom and I in our travels and adventures, so it felt fitting to dedicate the book to him.
- A keen eye for detail - we never found out what happened to the calf and we actually never got the steaks from the farmer either
Tom was bitterly disappointed about that! - I would add a LOT to the book now, with 2 more years of full time housesitting under my belt. Let’s just say that I won’t outline it here, in case a new edition comes out

As always for those boycotting Amazon I would recommend reviewing books on Good Reads if you can. Reviews help authors ever so much! -
Thanks Geoff and catch up soon!
Jess
@hitchedandhiking: Fair enough! I saw two entries for the book on Goodreads, so I used this one:
Here’s to many more adventures. ![]()
