URGENT: This is our third sit, flights in 3 weeks, and zero applications — what are we doing wrong?

I’ll repeat my statement that America isn’t unfriendly to visitors. The border agents can be tough, but as long as potential sitters are aware and prepared there shouldn’t be too much of a problem. America’s stance on unpaid work including sitting is no different to the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Let’s not confuse issues. Border agents in most countries are going to take exception to “visitors that are entering the country to provide a service that is explicitly prohibited by the rules and regulations of that country.” The US is no exception to that, nor should it be.

If you’re alluding to other elephants in the room, I’d let it go — we’re not allowed to talk about that here.

Certainly not in my experience.

Anyway, I would not consider such a generalization to be valid for any country or human group in the world.

There’s nothing enticing about taking care of 3 pets for a HO who can’t be bothered to write a review. Quite disrespectful of our time and energy caring for your home and pets.

I’d just like to know where people are getting this information about “2 prevous sitters who didn’t review you but reviewed other hosts”? Is this something that shows on the app but not on the website? I don’t see anything on the listing about previous sitters, so I would just assume they were newbies if not for the original post here mentioning it.

@IvanAlej , you’ve mentioned twice about the Airbnb; it probably only needs to be stated in one section. Minor nitpick.
Good luck and I hope you find a last-minute sitter. I loved my TX housesits and the botanical gardens are nothing short of spectacular. I would love to go again. Alas, another Canadian who’s not going south these days :frowning:

Yes, the app — not the website — shows if hosts have missing reviews from sitters. You also can look at the sitters’ profiles, to see whether they reviewed other hosts.

Many sitters know to check for the above and avoid sits with a pattern of missing reviews, especially if the sitters routinely reviewed other hosts.

Ah, OK. From the thread it wasn’t clear to me at first if people were only referring to the first post here, or the listing. I knew about checking missing reviews but guess I lost track of where I saw that previously, app or website.
It would be really nice if they both worked the same!

Thanks again everyone for the feedback — both the helpful and the critical. I’ve taken notes and I understand now that the missing reviews were a mistake on my part.

I’ve explained the situation, apologized, and I’m moving on to focus on finding a sitter for our dates.

Thanks again to those who offered genuine advice. Wishing you all great sits ahead.
