When no Public Transportation is available

As a UK host: we live in a fairly rural place, but not totally inaccessible. So, trains maybe once an hour (20 minutes walk to station) and unreliable bus service. Good local shops etc. though. Particularly for long sits, where sitters want to do some tourism, we like to leave a car for sitters to use, but have found that it is impossible to get insurance for overseas sitters. Does anyone know an insurer that will provide this?

Many sitters won’t want to guess or assume. Even young pets have illnesses, need medication or whatever. And some hosts don’t mention such. That’s why it’s better for you to include.

It’s dangerous for sitters to assume anything… about pet care even if we are experienced.
We might from our previous experience presume that cats can be left all day only to find that the homeowner wants them fed three times a day and not to be left more than 6 hours and definitely not left alone in the evening because they are “sociable and need company .”

@Jackievw - Turo can be cheaper but be sure to check the total after adding in insurance and some Turos charge for pickup. If you use a credit card that covers your car rental insurance, then check to be sure it kicks in - Turo isn’t classified as car rental on many credit cards.

Off-topic a bit, but I have a beef with the site about this. I often set the “Accessible by Public Transport” filter… And most of the properties that come up very obviously aren’t. Do some HOs just tick the boxes without thought?

To some extent I believe the answer is “yes.” I think a lot of car owners who never use public transportation really aren’t aware of anything beyond a vague knowledge that there is a bus that stops half a mile away. They’ve seen people use it. Or mayber there is a commuter train 3 miles away with a big parking lot and that qualifies in their mind. My spouse and I love urban hikes in cities unknown us and not having to rent a car on a distant sit. Generally, the sits I’ve picked had detailed descriptions of mass transit options because the Homeowners also take advantage of them. BTW, I also mention in my reviews what the mass transit options are like and whether or not sitters need a car for the sit.

@Joannb877 we use Turo and then get our insurance through rentalcover dot com. Better than the cover provided by the car rental agencies we checked out IMO.
