I tend to use my laptop and phone, but for different things/reasons. As I learn more about what’s unique to each, such as the bonus of favouriting on my phone/the app, then I use whichever works better for me. Currently I’m still staying closer to home and within easy driving distance for sits, so more than anything I’m travelling vicariously through the website (and @Amparo and others
). Once I choose to consider spreading my wings, then I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.
I bounce back and forth from phone and laptop as well because their different functionalities. It doesn’t bother me, surprise!
Anyhoo, thank you @Snowbird my life is happening now. I can’t wait anymore because my time here is limited. I have to make it all matter, now.
As far as location, I zoom in on the map as much as possible and I always always ask where exactly are you and how would I get there?
I work with what is and find a way to make it work for me. Too busy living to wish things were better.
I have more luck searching by County rather than by City if I am trying to be really specific. “San Francisco County” rather than “San Francisco City.” My main beef is that some owners are dishonest about what city/town they live in. The name of the town in which you live should be the town listed under your photo! If you are 45 minutes from London, you can put that in your description and even in your banner title!
If you look at a map of New York, you will see that the Newark, New Jersey airport is actually closer to Manhattan than JFK!!! As someone who lives on the West Coast of USA and used to fly frequently to that area, I preferred the Newark airport. It is easy to get into NYC from there. Just depends on exactly where you are going. If you are going to Long Island, for example, it makes more sense to fly into JFK.
No, definitely never discount a location, but the HO should be honest about where it is. Gravesend is not in London, it’s in Kent. So list it as such and mention proximity to London in the listings. It’s frustrating to click on things and find they were misrepresented, just like real estate listings when you’re searching to buy or rent.
I don’t need to look at a map of New York, I live here. The VAST majority of people who live in NYC do not live in Manhattan, and flying into and out of Newark is a haul for anyone not in Manhattan or Staten Island (about 2 million out of NYC’s 9 million residents). NYC is not just Manhattan, and Newark is not in NYC or even NY. Just call it what it is. NJ. Why is that so hard to do?
Absolutely, and this sit I mention was listed accurately. My reference was more about how I don’t discount perceived less desirable locations … Having had some very positive surprises ![]()
I didn’t say a 30-minute journey within London or to central London. I said being 30 minutes TO London. I lived in London for many years. If you live in Surrey, for example, don’t list yourself in London.
Related: I wish that homeowners would name the exact village/town they’re in, right in their description, if they prefer to put a larger centre as their location on the posting. (Or if they’re in the country, then the distance from the nearest town/village.).
Often I can discern the location by reading previous reviews and doing some general sleuthing with google street view etc, but if I can’t figure out exactly where they are, I sometimes don’t even bother to apply. Location is very important to me.
And on the other side of the coin, if I’m looking for a few days away just outside my city (easy travel but change of scenery), I’m going to bypass any listings that say they’re in my city… even if they’re really not. So it really pays to be honest when listing. After all, sitters are expected to be honest in their representations of what they’re offering, right?
According to Vanessa earlier, the search-program is including supposedly ‘nearby’ places, not the owners.
Can I just check with @Vanessa_A : when you say searches are a different topic, do you mean all situations of searching? I’m not referring to doing a search from the top of my screen with dates etc but have a saved search for London bookmarked on my browser. The map is visible but not useful for seeing ‘all real London’ without non-London places because some number are lumped together in the centre of the map but that excludes many areas within London.
When you do a “London, UK” search and then look at the map, rather than clicking immediately on the huge number, if you begin to zero in on the map, it will start to break down the huge number into smaller scattered numbers. Then you can see sits in different areas. This might help a little bit!
Ha oh dear, no. I sit all over London north-south-east-west and don’t want any actual London excluded. The problem is the inclusion of more and more locations that aren’t even near the biggest definition of the city - Greater London.
I think I have brought this once before. we live in a National Park that for some reason does not exist according to Trusted Housesitters.
Let me explain. Our house is listed under Devon UK. However the are “Dartmoor” does not exist. However there is an area called “Dartmoor Forest”. There are two problems with this. Dartmoor Forest is the old mediaeval term for the very middle of Dartmoor. There are hardly any houses there. It also excludes most of the National Park. This wouldn’t be a problem effectively if TH put the houses in Dartmoor in this category … but it doesn’t. So if as a sitter you search for Exmoor you are in luck. however if you put in Dartmoor …and find Dartmoor Forest … they find there are no sits there. This is despite that our house and the houses of at least three friends ARE in the National Park but are not listed here.
Is it possible to get this categary updated so it would help sitters and house owners…
Thanks
Tom

Hi,
Ever since I’ve joined THS as a home owner I’ve been uncomfortable with the fact that the site does not have the location of my village. It says I’m located in a village about half a mile from where I am and the two villages could not be more different. I always explain to prospective sitters where we are actually located, but I feel that I’m advertising falsely and people apply based on the advert of the village and not my actual village. Other than putting something in my advert and telling applicants, what else can I do? Can THS align my address to it’s actual location?
HI @LizH will go back and recheck this with the team but in the past when this has come up the explanation has been it’s a Google issue and not something within our control, however I will check again and get you an explanation.
Hi @LizH this is a issue with the location Database, could you let me know the name of your village please?
Hi I live in Thurcroft which is S66, the location comes up as Brampton-en-le-Morthen which is also S66 and about 1/2 mile -3/4 mile up the road from me. They are two very different villages in character ![]()
Hi Angela, I believe you are intending these messages to go to LizH ![]()
