Maybe try Albuquerque first and see how you do. It has lots to see and the elevation is less than Santa Fe & Denver. Santa Fe is less than an hour away and easy to visit also. There are always lots of sits in Albuquerque/Corrales area.

My gratitude to all who replied and shared tips and their experiences. I feel better prepared now to tackle the higher elevations and I loved @mam1996t 's suggestion to begin in Albuquerque and see how it goes. It feels as though my world and possibilities just grew!
