Baggage Fee Tip

Would look a bit sus though if there were heavy solid objects in there jutting out the pillow - you’d have to disguise it well and when it goes through the scanners they would likely stop you & ask questions… I’d probably just stick to stuffing it with clothes

This is no longer correct!!! I work in the travel industry and we have a few months ago implemented Ryanair via their new api in our holiday packages. And somewhere in 2023 they allowed us to sell them in our agencies via our GDS partner for flights only. The technique you are referring to, where agents use a default email address (not yours) is a bit annoying. But Ryanair has the alternative (but deliberately well hidden on their website) process of “customer verification” before you can check in. This can be done with firstname + family name + booking reference. The link to this process is on the check-in page below the big button “retrieve your booking”. Ryanair is ok to fly with, but for anything else they are not.

Have a look at Etihad airlines and Turkish airlines, they tend to allow a bit more than other airlines for an economy flight. Another option could be to look for a “premium economy” fare. This is a travel class between economy and business class. For some airlines this allows you to transport a bag more. As airlines make more money on all these extras, it is becoming rather complex. Even for me and i work in the travel industry

Some major airlines has also started with splitting up their services, so the cheapest option does not include luggage, you’re not allowed to select seat on booking or on check in etc. So if one want some of these it could sometimes be a better option to select a higher tier ticket than paying extra. Some loyalty cards also can give some of these services. I have a low level loyalty card in Skyteam for instance that gives me +1 checked in luggage (i.e. if I have a booking with one checked in I get two. It doesn’t apply to the cheapest luggage-less ticket).

On my current sit one could pay for a specific seat on an Economy-ticket - but the prices for the seats differed. The most expensive were the ones with extra legroom - they were quite costly. So if one wanted a seat like that for a 12+ hour flight on a return ticket, maybe an extra suitcase, it could be interesting to check out a higher level ticket were those things were included - and perhaps with a wider seat and better meal etc. also.

It is a bit more complicated to compare prices.

I sometimes use Skyscanner etc to check out possibilities, but I never buy tickets there. I use it to get an overview and buy the tickets directly from the airline. There are some pitfalls with those third parties sites. Particularly if it is a multiple leg journey, as they often pack different airlines together. So if there is an alteration in time for one leg, the others might be lost. Had it been same airline, the airline would be responsible.
