Classism, Accentism and Snobbery in UK?

I keep thinking of the old adage “the way you see the world says more about you than it says about the world.”

So true! ( post must be longer to print)

I arrived the night before for a sit. It was too early for me, and I had to chat. And political stuff and other stuff came up. And I wish it didn’t. And I got a weird review. Still 5 stars but she claimed I didn’t sweep. I vacuumed up so much dog hair I had to empty the thing 3 times. And all my sits claim I am so clean and tidy. One claimed I cleaned too much. But the conversation tilted things. And I knew she would be prickly. She was glad that her dog didn’t lose weight. ??? Always good to have your own tribe on sits. Then it works.

lack of gratitude doesn’t earn bonus points . amazing they could be so shallow after all you did to assist them .

There is no class bias?!?! Be grateful if you have never experienced any!

Also, you know the saying ‘it’s nice to be nice’?

I’m in Clermont Florida - the 2nd town in the USA to have a parkrun (IYKYK). Since we are a stone’s throw from Disney, we have LOADS of visitors from everywhere but especially the UK. When chatting with them, I sometimes need to really “shift gears” in my brain to understand them through their accents. (And also need some things repeated.)

I love hearing that even within the UK, people can have a difficult time understanding one another! And I love that it’s all the same laguage but sometimes you would hardly know it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@FLCatMom That reminds me of a documentary I once watched. It was set in inner City Glasgow… The local Glaswegian accent was so extremely strong & impossible to understand that there were subtitles (in English) for the rest of us native English speakers!!!:rofl::rofl:

There are snobs in every country.

Between ages 4 to age 7 I lived on a military base in Germany. I would regularly go to see a movie at the base cinema with the older girl who lived next door. My parents told me that one week they asked if I had enjoyed the film, and I replied that I didn’t know as it was in a foreign language. To which my neighbour replied “Debbie, they were Scottish!”

Well, you’ve certainly been polite to me!

Sounds really frustrating, especially after you’ve built up a solid track record. I’ve had a couple of sits where the vibe shifted the moment I opened my mouth, so I get why it sticks with you. Sometimes people have their pick and lean on their own biases without even clocking it. I try to shrug it off and save my energy for hosts who care about how I treat their home, not how I sound.
