We have a vacation (not a sit but we’ll have a sitter) planned soon. We are probably not cancelling! But every day it gets closer and I read about events, I’m not sure if the choice will be made for me. If your gut is saying cancel do it or maybe contact the homeowners as a start to see where their heads are at as they may be considering the same thing.
@Anne.323, suggest review the weblink posted by @Jenny. It’s very recent. While it has a different source problem - elevated fuel costs rather than travel safety - then many of the thread comments are likely relevant.
No right answers here. Choices. Hope you find a positive path forwards. Strange times.
@august, great train line. Last year we had a housesit in Zagreb - nice spot - and then took a rather long train journey to Berlin. Hope that you enjoyed the journey.
I love the opportunity THS given me to do something fulfilling. Tried other sites after some unpopular administrative moves by THS but for the time being THS works for me.
Qatar Airlines has been saying the same thing since 2/28. I’ve checked the flights I had booked through Doha on 3/1. None of them have taken off in 3+ weeks and no refund has been forthcoming as yet. I’d not lean much on what Qatar Airlines says. I’d lean even less on the “news” out of Washington.
Why does it matter if the train runs on diesel?
Running a nearly empty train, and hardly charging any money for tickets, during the current fuel crisis would be such a waste of fuel (and money), wouldn´t it?
@OnTheRoadAgain apparently some Qatar flights from Australia have been routed through Perth, then direct to London from Australia. I have a source in the travel industry in the UK, anxiously keeping an eye on the flights as his parents are expecting to fly early April ![]()
And no worries about me getting my news from Washington, definitely not my source ![]()
But the train will run anyway whether you are on it or not
It’s just natural for many people to feel sorry or glad for things that do not affect them directly.
I, for one, feel devastated by the current global crisis even if it hasn’t had any personal impact on me yet.
Hi everyone. I have just received official email that my flight to Manchester on 18 April has been cancelled. This is supposed to be the start of my 2026 house sitting in Lake District and Wales. I have informed the hosts and the host have cancelled my sit. Regret the inconvenience to them but this is beyond my control. Will be writing to others along the line to cancel.
What a shame. Out of interest what was the reason given by the airline?
They cancelled all flights to and from Doha until 15 June due to the existing and escalating crisis in the Middle East.
Oh Anne, you seemed to have a great trip lined up, what a bummer. You’ll have to come Australia/NZ instead.
How very disappointing for you @Anne.323. Sadly, it is out of our control. With your experience I am sure you will secure other lovely sits closer to home.
Ah, I didn’t realise you were flying from the Middle East
Yes, I had done a couple of sits in Australia. Love Tasmania for its nature and Sydney for its liveliness. Have not done NZ though. Too few and far in between.
I am Malaysian and my stopover was Doha for Qatar Airways.
Currently in beautiful Shanghai for a repeat house sit. I am definitely trying more China. It is beautiful.
@Anne.323 Something to consider. I fly Royal Brunei from Australia to London, usually with a brief stop in Dubai. However, I have been notified my flight will be direct from Brunei to London at the end of April. As Royal Brunei flies to Malaysia from Brunei, maybe this is an airline you could consider to fly you to the UK.
