Hi all, is it just me being squeamish or is it normal to have a dog allowed to pee and poo in the balcony?
I’ve been invited to a sitting, but I have a few reservations.
Thank you for advising.
If you have reservations, don’t take the sit. Doesn’t really matter what your reservations are, just don’t take a sit that doesn’t feel right to you.
I think you know the answer to be fair .
To sit or not I mean, not your question.
In general, it is not very common. The only country where I have seen them used is Australia, where pee trays are widely used by small dog owners.
(and btw, they are pretty convenient)
I did a sit in Spain and the dog was allowed to do this. He was an old boy and they said to leave the balcony door open so he could go out to do his business. He rarely did it there as we took him outside plenty of times.
You’re not being squeamish. This might be just the beginning of other issues the dog has.
If you feel squeamish at just the thought I personally would decline the sit.
I’m thinking they may not have access to a back yard @Mokina and this may save them (and you if you did the sit) taking the dog downstairs for its toileting. They may indeed have wee/poo pads. As the HO has invited you rather than you applying, you can easily ask for more clarification if you are at all interested.
We’ve done a few sits where the dogs did this and frankly I found it very convenient. I didn’t have to throw my clothes on and rush out in the morning
In my opinion, it would depend on whether there is a pad or a tray. In that case, the area is more restricted and easier to clean. Also, if it is a male or female. If it is a non neutered male and there is no specific area (pad or tray) I would say it can be pretty unhygienic.
Years ago, when I was living in Brazil, I came back home to find a terribly stinky filthy balcony. It turned out the tenant in the apartment above mine had been letting her dog pee in her balcony and it had been dripping down into mine for months!
@temba Thank you for your message.
There is a back yard, they don’t have wee/poo pads. There was no mention during the talk and there is a photograph of the balcony with nothing on.
I actually applied for the sitting and then I got the invitation. However, after some reflections I decided not to go ahead.
I shared my concerns, without hiding myself behind some excuses.
It is a real pity as lady and pet are very lovely and she very kindly invited me to stay for a few days prior to her sitting as another host cancelled me a long sitting with short notice and left me stranded.
Thanks @Shafofo It is also good to know what are people think.
