Feeling disheartened /anxious , keep missing sits and/or getting rejected

Note: Host a Sister (the original group) was just for travel, no pets involved. There are various offshoot groups, including at least one involving pet care. There also are subgroups for various countries, continents, women of certain ages, etc.

Ok, that makes a whole lot of difference if the sits weren’t actually confirmed. So you withdrew your applications rather than cancelled sits.

Hi @catscatscats24, try applying to sits with a cavapoo or cockerpoo - they love human company and affection, are not big and I reckon your son would fall in love with them.
My nephew, now aged 10, was also very anxious around dogs a few years back. His parents went ahead and got a golden retriever puppy which surprised me, considering the size she would grow to! However, Bella has been the best thing for him and he just loves her and is comfortable now with other dogs he meets. It’s worth giving it a try but you would need, as others have said, to include more in your profile about being open to looking after smaller, child-friendly dogs. Good luck!

yes i think one small dog is the way forward!

i have just this minute finished rewriting our profile to accurately reflect our situation - i have been very honest and i’m just hoping that pet owners will see that we are genuinely wanting to look after their dogs!
thanks for the reccomendation for cavapoo/cockapoo-i would love if THS had a filter for dog breed on the profile!
funnily enough labradors are the dog i would instinctively go for as theyre always so gentle but unfortunately my son equates size and bounciness of dog with it being scary and its propensity to be loud which is annoying, but it’s a bit of a block for him.

Don’t be afraid to apply again to this host. What is the worst that could happen? I was in a very similar situation (something broke on my watch, I offered to pay, host expressed gratitude to me but never left me a review). Although I was worried they were unhappy, I stayed in communication (xmas card, dropped a note when I would be in their area again). Ultimately they invited me to sit for them again.

Hi @catscatscats24
Some great feedback given.
Another thought - don’t look for sittings until they go to “Low Applicants” - you may have more luck as there are less applicants to compete with

Now I am happy again: late last night I applied for an attractive 3-weeks’ sit in Cambridge in April/May and it was confirmed before lunch this morning!

So then I could withdraw a bunch of applications that I had sent last week. And this one is going to be the best of all English sits that I had applied for.

So now planning the trip to England. I will travel by the ferry from Hook of Holland to Harwich, and I modified the search dates for the area between Hamburg and Rotterdam.

My stay in Cambridge is long enough that I don’t need to worry yet about sits after that. Just keep an eye open for nice sits to pop up. Maybe Chester or Bath or Salisbury.

@pietkuip That’s awesome. Happy for you!
When will you be there exactly? I’ll also be in the UK in May :uk:

@pietkuip You will feel right at home if you have a bike in Cambridge.

The Cambridge sit is 21 Apr till 11 May. I intend to stay in England at least the rest of May, maybe even till the end of June. No definite plans, but sure we could meet. Would you maybe be arriving by ferry from Ireland? I might visit Warrington and Chester where I lived a few months in 2001. PM.

No problem, mine looks different: I have a recumbent. Yes, I will like it there! I was there in 1983, also then before summer, when the students are still there. I took a photo then on the street of a beautiful young woman in a great dress, very early in the morning.

@pietkuip congratulations! Glad it worked out for you. Have a look also at Canterbury, Whitstable, Eastbourne, Brighton etc. - I see quite a few sits around there and they’re accessible by public transport. Cheers to a fun spring in England!

@pietkuip , the Cambridge Botanical Gardens are magnificent and you’ll be there at a perfect time. And The Cambridge Oven is a very good bread bakery but you have to get there early. The Fitzwilliam Museum is also very special. Hope your sit is super.
