Five Applications Pausing Discussion Post

Heads up TRUSTED HOUSE SITTERS. Please consider these changes.

All the “helpful” things that THS has put into place has made it less user friendly for sitters and, maybe, home owners; specifically, limiting to 5 applicants and not letting us communicate with home owners, when we are booked for any part of the sit.

If you live in the US and are interested in sits, like UK and Europe, which are 5-6 hours ahead of us, the sit is cut off before we even are awake and see them. Instead of a flat “5” applicants, I would like to see it open for 48 hours or 5 applicants, whichever comes last. I agree that it should not be open indefinitely and do appreciate some limit, but feel that 5 applicants max is detrimental to a lot of sitters. Along those same lines, I would like to see a limit on how long a home owner can take to decide who they are choosing for the sit; may 48-72 hours, max. The sitters are many times left in limbo waiting to see if they are even being considered while wondering if they should apply for/commit to another less desirable sit so they have a sit for that time frame.

Now, this is the one that really frustrates me: blocking us from communicating with the home owner if even one day of our sit overlaps another sit. In “the old days” before the change, I was booked for a sit that overlapped another sit. I was able to communicate with that home owner to say, “I really wish I could do your sit, but I already have a sit that overlaps your first week. Please keep me in mind for future sits.” The home owner contacted me, telling me she had looked at my profile and I was exactly what she wanted and asking that, if she could find a sitter for the first week, would I come and do the last two. Yes! In addition to the lovely two-week sit, I was able to meet, and share dinner with, the nice couple who sat the first week and did a handoff to me. Another benefit to meeting this couple is that we have been able to refer each other for sits that we have been offered and can’t do and for giving us heads up on things (such as hidden cameras) that they have discovered, at sits we may be considering.

I wish there was a way that we could speak directly with previous sitters to learn more about the sit before we commit. I know, sitters may not want to put negative things in their reviews that might preclude them from getting a repeat sit; however, that negative might be something that’s OK for them but would be a deal breaker for someone else. (People coming and going from the house, meddling neighbors, etc.)

THS please consider these changes and/or suggestions from others. Oh, and please don’t give home owners the idea that we love animals so much that we are willing to give up a portion of our life and pay our own expenses just for the honor of coming to their home and hanging out with their pets. They should understand that there is reciprocity involved and that the sitter should be getting as much out of this exchange as the home owner. TIA

And they still won’t consider the suggestions. :woman_shrugging:

As a HO, I feel 10 would be better. We have people applying that have not read our profile thoroughly, but apply because of the area. So, those people are in the first 5. It usually takes a few days to review all and then make decisions. Then setup a video call.

TBH notifications are pretty useless for highly attractive sits.
I have notifications set up for several areas with date ranges.
I seem to get notification alerts 15-30 minutes after the posting.
For super desireable postings they might as well not come because when I click in?
The Bots have already taken the 5-&-done responses.

I decided to reapply after I got declined and she relisted. I figured, if she didn’t like anyone, maybe I still have a shot. Maybe she still won’t like anyone of the new applicants.

@Huronbase did you ask why they declined you the first time? If not then applying again would probably just irritate the HO & they’ll just hit decline again!
We got declined for an attractive Christmas sit the other day. The HO wrote a very friendly message saying they thought they’d found someone but would love to keep us in mind for future. So when I saw the next day they were still reviewing I wrote again acknowledging the decline, noting they were still reviewing, and said we’d be flying in to their region anyway and were still interested so to let us know if anything changes. She replied with a friendly ‘will do!’ Another day and still reviewing but I’m not pushing it anymore. We’re not beggars! Some people just can’t make decisions (or are not honest!) I prefer to work with straightforward people!

No need to reapply indeed - if you already applied, it means you can now communicate directly with the HO so you can just reach out to them and let them know you’re still interested without clicking Apply once more.

Thanks. They sent me an email to do a review, based on my last home owner review. I gave the home owner a 5 star based on the potential of the sit. I did add that THS does not stress the fact that the home owner isn’t supposed to have other people on premises while the sitter is in possession of the home. (It was like a revolving door around there, between the teenage sons and their friends and the nosy neighbor.) THS gives owners the impression that we just live to do (free) sits, while sitters in the area are making $95-$100 a day and our only compensation is the expectation of uninterrupted time to use as we please.

I plan to do the review. I think the sitters sometimes get treated like a red-headed step child. LOL

Thanks for reaching out. I wish there was a way that potential sitters could talk to past sitters to learn things they might not want to cover in a review.

Kind regards!

I gave the home owner a 5 star based on the potential of the sit.

So you lied? You need to tell the actual truth about what the sit is like, not what it may be like if the HO improves.

I wish there was a way that potential sitters could talk to past sitters to learn things they might not want to cover in a review.

The reviews are there specifically so you can communicate issues with sitters. What kinds of things would you not want to cover in a review?

Regarding the revolving door, you need to set and maintain boundaries as well. If the HOs are unaware, you need to inform them and bring in member services to back you up, if needed.

Man alive! This is exactly why sitters walk into dodgy sits. How can you rate a sit on its “potential” and not the reality?! @CreatureCuddler has laid it out for you clearly. Set boundaries, tell the truth, protect future sitters :flushed::flushed: #beyondbelief

Right? It’s like people who want to set you up with their friend and they’re all ‘he’s great’. well, except that he’s a slob, has never lived away from his mommy, can’t hold a job, plays video games all day, and only showers once a week. but the right woman is really going to change him and he has the potential to be an amazing partner. yeah. hard pass. if they’re not amazing now, I have less than 0 interest, thanks.

I need a few more of these :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: for that potential date @CreatureCuddler. What a dreamboat :face_with_peeking_eye: #tindertastic #sorryofftopic

I didn’t actually reapply. My application stated, I see that you relisted, if you still don’t find anyone that works, I hope you reconsider. I think that is valid. I applied for a job once, where they said they wanted an MBA, thanks but good luck. 10 days later they offered me the job. Said I had more on the ball than the MBAs they interviewed. So you never know.

@Huronbase That’s a good response- you politely gave them the opportunity to reconsider. I’m thinking of doing the same with the Christmas sit I mentioned above. If it remains ‘reviewing’ a few more days and we remain available I may offer them the opportunity to reconsider us too! They might be embarrassed to ask us again having declined us, or they have just made a polite excuse, but their message was friendly so… who knows!
I figure we’d have nothing to lose!

What amazes me is that it is a great sit, in FL during winter. Great amenities. Went fast with 5 apps. Now low applications.

It’s no longer at the top of the list and likely has the dreaded ‘low applications’ tag on it. If the HO was smart they’d have you. But if they aren’t up for that, for whatever reason, they’d remove the dates then add them again so it’s listing as new again.

they did make it new, only this time it didn’t fill up in 12 hours like the first time

ah, well. then they should get over themselves or they’re going to be stuck without a sitter.

She just enough with the 2nd listing, including my note, so 4 new people. They may find what they are looking for and I will find a better sit. Doesn’t that work out that way?
