I’m currently on a road trip along the U.S. West Coast and prices for gas are steeply stepped up everywhere. $6 and upward per gallon.
We have a lot of gas production in the country, so supplies should be available, but price surges will hurt many Americans, especially those who can least afford it. And many businesses will be hit directly or indirectly.
Wow! Nice spot. We’ve spent five months over last two years on Crete - handful of housesits and private. Certainly possible that we’ve assisted same pet parents.
@ziggy, we have not cancelled 2026 plans but have evolved geographic priorities and flight paths. Recently agreed to spend a month in Scandinavia, a first for us.
@GotYourBack thanks for your feedback. A dream of mine is to sit in Scandi countries. If I didn’t live so far away, I might have reconsidered my decision to travel. Enjoy that sit, I bet it will be A.mazing!
@ziggy, thanks. Not local for us too. We’re excited. Given topic, thanks to those that contributed on past Forum flight website thread. Ive played bunch with skyscanner and this morning booked long-distance flights that were great value via unfamiliar routing. Ability to select a country (not just an airport) as from-to location and monthly flex dates can create surprisingly curious options.
Yes, I do that with most flights I take. I don’t mind a very long flight with unfamiliar routing. I once took a trip from Boston to Bali, took me like two days, four airports and I never saw daylight once Was quite the experience! Love flying so it was all an adventure. Google Flights is a great way to find interesting flights.
In the UK petrol is sold in litres and yesterday I bought it at £1.38 per litre (at the cheapest station). Apparently 1 US liquid gallon = 3.785 litres equivalent to $7 per gallon. I don’t need my car much in town and have a bicycle which I use to go to the gym and walk a lot. However, tomorrow I’m off on a repeat sit 188 miles away so will be driving 50-55mph on the motorway to conserve as much fuel as possible.
Here currently located in Vietnam, where discussions in the nomad groups are starting around visa runs and what to do -book or not to book that is the question!
I typically use THS for visa run sits -but am having most of my applications across Asia rejected now as owners opt for sitters in country incase things worsen and I end up essentially stuck.
There are LOADS of sits in Dubai / UAE with low interest -and I’m surprised THS hasn’t issued a statement or put any advisories on given the sketchiness of the media blackout there and circulating videos on social media of the war attacks happening. I remember seeing the same thing with Israel when that started and wonder how things are managed in app or if they just let supply/demand dry up?
In the meanwhile, sit confirm response times are also up, I guess as owners decide also, but it makes the process frustrating -id much rather be confirmed for a sit, book my flight now whilst still relatively affordable and risk the cancellation down the line if fuel shortages mean flights cancel (but surely airlines know this and aren’t just allowing flights to be better booked if they know they can’t fulfill?!)… than hang on for a response and disappoint the sit as flight costs have increased and it’s now unaffordable… a lose lose!
There are so many variables currently -and we are preparing for import shortages as shipping supply routes will take months to reform once the disagreements over paying for oil in Yuen is resolved!
An almighty If / when!
Europe’s advice to it’s citizens to have at least 3 months of food and water stored wasn’t for no reason -now we know.
Saying that, I’d much rather be here in Asia than back in blighty and have zero plans to return anytime soon -tgf credit cards
“Despite assurances from the government that fuel stocks across NSW are fine, dozens of petrol stations across the state are starting to run dry. At least 42 petrol stations are reportedly out of fuel, and almost double have no diesel. Petrol stations in Baulkham Hills have run out completely, with drivers being forced to leave without filling up.”
Fuel that is available is now up to $AUD10 per gallon (3.78 ltrs). I am getting an influx of invitations to sit fairly local as sitters are cancelling due to the cost of driving so I get where you are at @Smiley driving that distance and back. Maybe we need to add a fuel levy to our sits or bill THS
Driving at those speeds on motorways is not recommended as other drivers aren’t expecting vehicles travelling that slowly (relatively) and find it discombobulating. Their eyes and brains are accustomed to processing vehicles at speeds of 60-80 m.p.h However, if you can find a stretch of motorway without either road works, or queues do please share the location
@Smiley most HGVs are fitted with speed restrictors set to 56mph.
I suspect driving at 50 - 55 moh to save fuel could become commonplace if fuel supplies become unreliable. Year ago there were fuel strikes with depots being blockade to prevent tankers leaving. I car shared with a colleague to get to work as our office was in the Cotswolds and we drove everywhere at 50 - 55mph as you just didn’t know when & where you woukd next be able to get fuel.
Thank you, but I will drive at that speed in the left lane. I appreciate lorries will be overtaking me. I think, given the cost of fuel and no doubt scarcity if this war continues for some time, it would be an idea for the speed limits to be reduced.
Doubt most people will run out and buy an electric car if they have a current gas car that runs well and they do the math. Like my current road trip, even if I presumed gas at say $5 a gallon extra and 3,000 miles, would be a drop in the bucket vs. trading in a car. And the current circumstances won’t last indefinitely.
Current gas challenges could tip over some folks who were car shopping anyway. If so, they’d be smart to lease, rather than buy, because EV tech is evolving quickly.
It also will be interesting to see how the EV market will evolve. China is making better EVs at a fraction of the cost of other manufacturers.
