Good first message?

Hi guys, just looking for a bit of feedback. I’ve been a full time sitter for 6 months now, and for quite a while I was sending pretty much the same first message when applying for sits, but I’ve had a bit of a re-think recently and the below is what I’ve settled on. Any profile feedback also welcome.

Hi [owner name], hope you’re having a good week.

I love cats and have been catsitting full time since May, travelling around the country. I also own a removals business (which I now run remotely) that has given me plenty of experience of being careful with people’s valuables and homes.

We always had cats when I was growing up, but living in rented places I’ve mostly not been able to have one as an adult, so I always appreciate the opportunity to spend time with some furry friends.

[pet name] sounds lovely, and I’d be grateful if you would consider me for looking after him/her/them. I’d be happy to have a chat on the phone or via video chat.

Take care,
Robin

That is fine but as a homeowner I prefer a shorter initial message and one that is personal— maybe say what drew you to the housesit?

I also find your message too lengthy. I wouldn’t include what type of business you own or the fact that you’ve been living in rented places. This has no relevance to applying for sits and I don’t think you need to share that with homeowners.

I like your message. I appreciate the info about your job and your love of cats and reason for wanting to pet sit. You could skip “hope you’re having a good week” and maybe start with “I’ve read your listing and as a cat lover…”

I’d have a re-think again, because I wouldn’t have said any of that is personalised, other than the names. You are not standing out, everyone on here loves cats/dogs.

I think you are right to mention your removals business, it is hugely relevant to property/homes, I’m a landlord and I used to own a cleaning company, and I always mention it and we get accepted for almost every sit we apply for.

However, traveling around the country, and living in rented places I wouldn’t have mentioned, they aren’t selling points. Also, I wouldn’t mention May either, you have 15 reviews, which is brilliant, but by putting May it sounds like you have no experience, so don’t point May out, they can read when you started in your profile… YOU HAVE 15 REVIEWS !!! Don’t put anything in that detracts from that.
