Have you ever been impacted by a natural disaster? Share your advice and resources

Hello everyone,

As you know, at TrustedHousesitters, we offer members the chance to experience house sits in locations across the globe.

On very rare occasions, a natural disaster could impact your sit or travel arrangements, and this is what we recommend;

  • Reach out to our 24/7 Membership Services team
  • Check the advice being offered by local emergency responders
  • Contact the owner/sitter to check if the sit has been affected by the events, and make alternative arrangements if necessary

Depending on your location, here are other useful sources of information:

Have you ever been impacted by a natural disaster while on a sit, at home, or on holiday? Please share your advice, experiences, and any resources that you found useful.

Take care,

I have not been personally affected but I do have a tip for where to find helpful source of information during a natural disaster .

Google maps has a Crisis Alert information feature which is really useful during a natural disaster.

For example if you look at LA right now - you can see the areas affected by the fires , hotels with available rooms , road closures, emergency numbers and links to other websites with information . The map is updated hourly during a crisis ( wildfire, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes etc )

These Alerts make emergency information from local, national or international authorities easily accessible during a crisis. You can find that information highlighted on Google Maps. Examples of crisis information include emergency phone numbers, websites or map visualisations for a detailed view.

Select the icon on the map to open the alert and get more information about the crisis.

We were on NZ when cyclone Gabrielle hit. We were fortunate that the house wasn’t badly impacted but we did have water flooding under the door, from the heavy rain. You do get loud alarms which go off on your phone, which is helpful. We are fairly practical and were able to suck up the water with a carpet cleaner and used wood from the garage to divert water away from the door! Generally we keep an eye on the weather forecast, as severe weather is more common than it used to be and check the property & garden, before a storm for anything that get blown away!
