Once the dogs were okay I did not want her to worry while she was on her trip. So although we were not doing well at all, I messaged her everyday with good news about her animals. So we were accused of sending mixed messages.

Sorry I don’t agree with this. Once the pets were ok you should have messaged the HO with a truthful update. I understand the HO here is terrible but they are still owed the truth. I would been livid if I received ‘all’s well’ updates and returned to find out their was a crisis that required an emergency vet visit.
The emergency vet crisis happened our first day and we *immediately* got in touch with the host. We were in close communication all that night (we spent that night in the vet waiting room), all the next day, and over the course of the following 3 days with follow-up blood draw appointments to the vet.
The host’s complaint is that we did not let them know that we were having a hard time after the crisis was over.
Ah ok, that makes more sense then and I understand why you wouldn’t communicate a whole list of grievances during the sit. Thanks for clarifying!
