House cleaning and other scheduled service

“they gave us (our first!) 4* review - reason being that we’d objected to having the builders in!!“
@Lokstar, did they mention that in their review or privately? If it’s in the review it will backfire.

@Newpetlover It was public- in their review!! We responded to the review giving more details of all the workers (as in our own review on their site) and mentioning it was against the 3rd party policy. We know it is a temporary situation i.e the renos are almost complete- so no point involving THS- but the way they treated us needed to be exposed- for future sitters benefit about the type of hosts they are.

@Lokstar Do you know how their reviews from sitters have unfolded since?

Personally, I’d never sit for hosts like that if I saw such a review.

@Maggie8K Yes their sitter directly after us gave a great review and they responded to his and gave him an OTT review- probably to compensate for our interaction! Unfortunately that sitter started just one week after us so would not have seen our review till later (if at all) as we waited till the very last minute to post it i.e 11.30pm on the 14th day but the HO must have waited to do exactly the same!!
Anyway future readers will see that this was an exception on both sides but I’m still glad we told our truth and didn’t just let them get away with it!

Glad you reviewed them factually. That’s a service to fellow sitters.

We have a cleaner that comes twice a week, but it’s through a service. It is always the same person, and we really like her. We work from home, too, and sometimes the vacuuming noise can be too much, but she’s only here for a couple of hours, so we work around it. If sitters don’t want the service because it’s disruptive to them, then we reschedule, and it’s not a big deal. We are never gone for more than two weeks, but we always ask if they are ok with it first.

I’m hijacking this thread for a question I have pertaining to leaving my latest sit today.
The house is beautiful and immaculate and the pets are wonderful. However, I have a problem which I’ve never come across in six years. There are no cleaning products or cloths. Cleaners come in every Mondayand blitz the place but they obviously bring their own stuff. What would you do in these circumstances? Wipe down and leave as tidy as possible or go and buy things so it can be left to your usual standard.
The place was immaculate when we arrived and we are quite a tidy couple but ….

I would ask the HO because I would expect them to cover the cost of supplies for cleaning.

Tomorrow is Monday. Cleaners will come again so I would do my best with the products available. Unless that means leaving the place clearly unclean.
As @MaggieUU suggest, you could communicate with the owner asking where the cleaning utensils are and see what they expect.

This gives me bit of the ‘icks’ TBH. Surely, the HOs have a periodic need to clean SOMETHING on any given Tuesday through Sunday?

You are right. It does sound weird.

Maybe google for homemade cleaners, like vinegar or citrus mixes, baking soda or such if you don’t want to pay for cleaning supplies. If it were me, I’d just spring for the supplies, because the cost is minor.

I would ask the host where the cleaning equipment is. They might well ask you to leave it if the cleaner comes tomorrow.

Vinegar and baking soda as mentioned. Tips here:

You might actually get a lot done only with warm water. But if you have no bucket and cloths….

@ElsieDownie
Ask the host .
There may be a cleaners cupboard somewhere in the property with all the equipment .

Yes, me too, I would just buy 1-2 cloths and 1 multi-purpose cleaning spray.

Thank you for all your replies.
I couldn’t leave the property without cleaning at least the shower room and kitchen so I sent hubby down to the supermarket and got an own brand cleaner that does everything. I didn’t know the host’s preferences so it was that or nothing.
I couldn’t ask them as they were already up in the air and there is no cleaners cupboard unless it’s in the locked garage.
I am ever so slightly OCD (who am I kidding, I’m the one that straightens the squint cutlery in the restaurant) and I wouldn’t have slept if I hadn’t cleaned.
Just shows you, after six years we can still be surprised
