How much communication during a sit, and do you like to hear from host?

We have discussed this here on the forum a lot. I don’t think it should be the decision of the sitter as to how much communication there is. Best to ask the owners before they leave how much contact they’d like/pics. Some have said they’d like daily updates, others not at all unless I have a problem, others whenever I feel like it. Some owners would be overwhelmed if they were contacted daily without being asked. They are supposed to be on holiday.

In our 120 sits we’ve had both extremes from house-holders, ‘don’t contact me unless it’s an emergency’ and ‘daily pics of pets’. The former is more rare but most don’t feel the need for daily contact. There are big generational, and smaller cultural, differences in amount of contact. The younger generation expect far more frequent contact than we older folk. I’m a bit disappointed that many people answering seem to be encouraging a norm of daily contact. We do, of course, send daily pics if requested, but I find it a bit excessive.
Don’t make assumptions, just ask.

i’ve done 20+ sits, mostly for older folks, and they’ve asked for daily updates. No biggie for me. Only one set of hosts said they didn’t need pet updates, but they asked me to look out for a bill in the mail, so we ended up communicating anyway.
