Leaving a very dirty house

Agreed. Reciprocity should start at the outset if host and sitter are in a dynamic of equals.

Hello. I disagree, because the arrangement was already established, that is, both the owners and I had already agreed to this housesitting. I contacted them to tell them that I was very close and available the day before. The owners often ask us to arrive a day early to show us the house and the pets’ routines, but they didn’t want me to go the day before, even though they knew I would have to pay for a night in a hotel. At first I thought they didn’t have a room available, but they did.
They asked to meet me in person before the housesitting because they thought they wouldn’t be home when I arrived (they supposedly had to leave very early that day, but they didn’t). I offered to go to their house and they refused.

Exactly. But they did not let me in before.

I read another post in which a Trusted House Sitter needed proof of their experience, and I would suggest that before you leave, you take photos of the kitchen and any potential issues, like dog stains. I was trying to find a cat among the five pets, two of which were not listed. The cat was in a very messy closet, there were dirty clothes, and underwear on the unmade bed, and there were drugs on the bedroom floor, which made me really uncomfortable. I didn’t leave because it was such a short stay, but any longer, and I would have.

ah, I was under the impression that this was an earlier meeting, before offering the official sit. but your interpretation makes more sense in these circumstances.

report them to trusted house sitters and give them a bad review

I had a rough sit with a cat urinating on the floor and stepping it unintentionally. And popping outside the box and on the couch, my comforter, rugs… It was rough. I informed her and she was going to let me off the hook which I think would’ve been difficult for her. I stayed. Kept in touch with her and write a factual review.

Since you are new, and I am kind of new too, I will suggest not taking sits that have multiple animals. Those people need to pay sitters and should use Rover. A straight across exchange ought to have 2-3 max pets. IMHO. And they shouldn’t ask you to not leave their pet alone more than 2-3 hours. If that’s what they want they need to pay.

Be selective with your sits. There are good ones out there
