My rescue dog used to follow me everywhere. But I trained him to understand when I’m headed to the toilet, so he doesn’t follow.
I started doing that, because he’d get up even at night, if I went to pee. I felt bad that he’d have to wake suddenly and get out of his cozy bed for no reason. So I started going with the door open, saying: “Maggie going to the bathroom.” 
It took maybe a week of repetition and he got it.

So far, my sit cats have followed me to the bathroom, but fortunately only lounging by my feet. I figure that’s a compliment from a cat.
My current sit dog sniffs the toilet (up close and personal) after I use it
