Have I understood this correctly, when travelling to NZ it is the airline that checks the onward ticket, not NZ immigration on arrival? Yes, or no please?

@TheEnglishFlaneur , when we went last year only the airline asked if we had an onward ticket. (We did)We said yes, she asked when it was for , we told her, she said thanks and wished us a pleasant stay. She didnt even ask to see it!
